My local gun shop has a used T/C Hawken flinter in .50 cal but he tells me that the barrel is shot out of it.

I've tried to research online this morning but all I'm coming up with is Green Mountain barrels with a 1/70 twist.

I also can't seem to find any on T/C's site.

Is this something they would maybe cover under their warranty?

I doubt it.

But what is your concern with the Green Mountain barrel? It is a great barrel and perfect for PRBs?

A thought came to my mind as I read your post.Is it really possible to shoot out a front loader? My way of thinking is that the velocity and pressures are not that great to do it in the life time of a hunter or shooter. The story is a bit different for a very high velocity rifle such as a 220 swift or something in that high speed category, but a muzzle loader? For the most part, one is shooting soft lead and not a copper jacket bullet.Maybe the barrel is ok,or maybe it has a bad rust issue.

Call TC's Customer Service and/or Cain's Outdoor in West VA.

If you're going to stay with patched balls, ask for their .50cal 32" x 1:66" round ball twist barrel...outstanding barrels.
(TCs .45/50cal barrels are 15/16" flat-to-flat)

Is that not only a cap lock barrel? That is the only way I have seen one but I haven't seen many.
I would love to have one in flint.

Another possibility: I can't tell you how many "shot out" barrels I've rescued simply by cleaning them well.

Yes,absolutely agree with that statement.I only know of two such cases,my Dad's and my friend's smoke poles fall into that category.I inherited my Dad's rifle and found after many years of his improper cleaning methods, that his bore was simply caked up from all that bore butter he used and never really got to the "bottom of things"with his cleaning. After days of cleaning it,only the rust appeared but at least I restored the accuracy to minute of deer.As with my friend's rifle,I found out that he cleaned it with the same stuff as his 30-06 and in as about as much time,a couple of swipes and he was done.Eight years later,I had to clean it for him when he showed up to shoot it for good old times sake.My heart about stopped with the first patch down the bore.

Brown Bear , I agree completely, many barrels given up as worn out just need cleaned well. In extreme conditions lapped with a lead slug and grinding coumpound and then polishing coumpound but almost always salvagable. I recommend he buy it at a good price since the dealer thinks it is shot out, clean it up and then if absolutely neccessary get a green mouintain barrel. :idunno:

They sent me one in flint, I sent back the 1in48 and they replaced it with a 1in66, no questions asked. :v

BUT, you got the typical shallow groove rifling as in the standard barrels. It would seem that the cut rifled barrels are no more from T-C.

I never said the barrels are worth a manure, just said they have been known to replace said manure with more manure!
Bryan, dont let me discourage you, some have had good luck with their T/C rifles, I am not one of those people. Not a shallow groove fan myself! :v

I agree, slug the bore. Some gunsmiths think they know.On this forum lots of guys know cause we have done it all!
Nit Wit

You can have the barrel rebored for about half the price of a replacement. The Lymans Great Plains Rifle is 15/16" across the flats (like the TC 50 caliber barrels) and comes in .54 caliber, so you probably do not need to worry about the TC Hawken not having enough barrel wall. I'm getting that done right now on a .62.
Or, for a couple hundred a whole new barrel (a replacement drop-in) could be made with the existing hardware on the present barrel. I've done that on a GPR. Love it.
Or, as someone suggested on the forum a few days ago, a relining may be possible. I am looking into that possibility myself right now because it may provide the option of going smaller as well as bigger.

TC made both in .45/.50/.54...I used to have caplocks, then got Flint versions 10 years ago

Who would do this kind of work. I might be interested in have a barrel re bored. Thanks.

Barrel maker Ed Rayl in Gassaway, West VA rebores & rerifles barrels...just had one done, $135.

From what I gathered talking with Ed, the barrel wall thickness is not necessarily the highest priority decision point...the configuration and size/depth of the breechplug threads can be a go/no-go issue.

I asked him if he could rebore a straight GM 7/8" x 42" x .45cal barrel to a .54cal smoothbore...plenty of wall thickness left but the threads were the deal breaker as he was worried they'd end up too shallow and potentially be unsafe...so I had him rebore/rerifle it to a .50cal.

Google him up and just discuss it with him...it may be that the TC threads will be fine for reboring to the next caliber, but I wouldn't bet lunch on it.

And by the time you add $15 shipping & insurance each way you're within a couple of 'double whoppers' of the cost of a brand new hooked breech barrel (far different from all the costs associated with buying a new pinned barrel that would have to then be breeched/fitted/finished into an existing custom stock)

That's great but the problem is that you cant buy a brand new barrel for a TC Renegade flint any longer. Is there anyone out there that will build a barrel from scratch for a TC Renegade? I really like the gun so to me it would be worth the cost.

It's a safe bet that Ed Rayl can do the job.

You can buy a 1” Green Mountain percussion barrel from Track and have them put a flint breech plug on it. That is a little expensive but it is a darn good barrel. Probably better than a factory TC barrel. 010 to 012 deep grooves for patched round balls, too. That also is if they ever get any more GM barrels! They had some a while ago.

Bryan,
If you do not get gun pm me with gun shop name and I will get it . TC has a lifetime warranty just send the gun to them tell them the flints always break and it will no longer pattern .They will redo lock and whatever barrel needs. free of charge.
