I put my boys through a nine week 4H Shooting Sports program as a vehicle for them to obtain their hunter safety certificate and I was very impressed with the program. They covered it all {except handguns because it was for kids from 12 to 18 NYS says ya gotta be 21 to beg for your right to have a handgun} They have a very healthy muzzleloader program and do a very good job of teaching it. They run a program for adults that is similar but I'm less familiar with that. Any of you that have kids that need the certificate,or otherwise or interested in shooting sports I heartily recommend checking out your local 4H

"Now, how do we get that excitement we share to the masses?"

The interest must be within others first, I cannot imagine want the wine and cheese crowd could do to get my excitment level in that niche elevated.

true, but often one needs to awaken an unrealized interest.

too often, when i was younger, the BP crowd seemed stand- offish and aloof, so i try to be as polite and friendly as is reasonably possible whenever someone asks a question on the range.

since it's not a 'money sport' (like baseball, football etc.) the word will spread at the speed of sound, rather than broadcast at the speed of money.

that's fine by me.

Here's something I've noticed on the rare occasions that I go to my local range. (I normally shoot in my Mothers pasture). A good number of fellow shooters seem to be quite fascinated when they see me shooting one of my Hawkens using PRB's. They're actually amazed at how accurate they can be.

Sometimes people just need to be made more aware that pursuing an activity is something that's not as hard to reach as they had imagined.
For instance, there are many immigrants who may have served mandatory military duty in their home countries, then emigate here and don't realize where the nearest gun clubs are located or just how unregulated & easy black powder firearms are to obtain in most states.
Even many citizens don't know where or who to turn to if they want to get started in the shooting sports, especially how to locate the more affordable clubs.
Not everyone is equally assertive when trying to pursue any kind of general shooting interests. A little bit of local club level assistance can help to further enlarge the pool of potential black powder shooters.
It's pretty well documented that most primitive method hunters start out as modern method hunters first. It's usually not until sometime afterward that the modern archery or gun hunter tries more primitive methods, which would apply to a percentage even if they're currently shooting or have an interest in "modern" muzzle loaders. :winking:
