I had grits for breakfast this morning
My wife got up a little later and asked what I had. She usually chooses something different
But she thought grits sounded real good
So I made hers.
Mine, grits a little butter, some cheese, pepper flakes and ground hot pepper
Her
Grits, butter,sugar and milk
Do you like your grits savory or sweet?
Sweet. Sugar, milk is my go to.
Sometimes brown sugar.

Wife wont touch them, me there is no bad way to have them, when we were first married lived in N.Carolina right on the coastal shore, went to our first married breakfast together, placed our orders. When they came there was two big bowls of grits along with the orders, she looks at me and said I didnt order those damn things, told her your in the south honey just hand them over here. 😉
I was raised in Md & Hominy & grits were both served pretty regularly in our house while growin up. My mother is German & she’d make them with milk, butter & sugar ( which we all loved ). My grandma bein from Wva mostly made Hominy for supper fried in bacon grease with salt & pepper. We all liked that too. In my early 30’s was my first of many trips to Manteo on Roanoke Island where I had the most amazing shrimp & grits in the world. I was some kinda hooked & nearly 30yrs later that’s still my fav way to have grits.

I vary, sometimes like you and sometimes like your wife too. Plus all steps in between.

Excellent and entertaining thread. As a lifelong Yankee I’ve never had grits, my in-laws are Italian immigrants so I have had polenta but don’t care for it.

I have them two ways, when freshly made,, little teaspoon of honey or jelly, stirred till melted , or butter salt and pepper, one other way is left over grits placed in a loaf and chilled over night, in the morning slice it thick like French toast, lay it on a hot griddle with with some bacon fat, and fry it up, again a little bit of butter or honey / jelly or as my MIL likes pressed maple syrup

Grits aren't cream of wheat! I fix them just like you do!

Savory

SAVORY only for this here Yankee!! I love to “grit my teeth” as often as possible. We make the Quick Grits type and buy them by the boatload at Sam’s Club. I love what I call “Dirty Grits”, with cooked bacon or sausage, eggs and a big chunk of butter, all mixed in while they are finishing cooking. Yum, Yum. Good stuff in every bite. Wife likes them made plain, and then with butter and a couple of sunny side up eggs mixed together on her plate. BTW. I always say “show me someone who doesn’t like grits and I’ll show you someone who has never tasted grits”!!

Howdy:
Been a grits freak my entire life. Kinda' weird fer a Northern boy?
Love them savory. NOT a sweets fan of any kind!
I prefer mine with fried over easy eggs, plus cheese, onions, hot sauce, Green Chilies, and garlic.
Just making some now.
God bless:

Bigger question, is grits singular or plural?
