Hello all,

Like the title says, is there any way to keep the ramrod from being jarred forward from recoil?

If you can put a slight bend in it, it should stay in place. What is your RR made of? Some guns, especially small caliber with aluminum rods have a spring. Generally any more I don't put the RR back after loading. Just keep it sitting there, which isn't always practical depending on the situation.

I have a pedersoli 10ga sxs. I bought a replacement delrin ramrod from Track of the Wolf.

Do you happen to have an old bow quiver lying around? Cut off one of the rubber arrow clips and snap it over your rammer just behind one of the thimbles. That should keep it from moving under recoil to get the rammer out you just pop it off. If not, you could cut your own from a thick piece of dense rubber. 🤔

I never noticed. I've had rammers come out while hiking. Turned them around or swapped ends so it would stay in. Could use tape. One of my rifles has a pin in the bottom of the barrel and the ferrule has a groove turned in it . Perty cool. The rifle has a oddball size loop thingy's and a undersize rammer. Loose all the time. Dang fuzz!

I have tied a "wang" thru the ferrule closest to the muzzle to provide just enough friction to hold the rod in place, but still plenty loose enough to extract the ram rod.

Depending on the size of the ram rod you could file a shallow grove in it and place a "O"-ring or leather washer in it that will put tension on the barrel.

As said in a response above, if it is a wooden ramrod just heat the middle section over your stove and bend the rod slightly. Be sure the bend is behind the rear thimble. That’ll keep it in and is authentic. Old time ramrods were formed from split hickory not sawn so it was naturally bent in all sorts of directions.

I personally do not like a tight RR as it is a problem for arthritis hands. I do like them snug enough so you can invert the rifle without it falling out. Once I had a sloppy RR and cleaned the end about two inches from the brass tip and layed about 1" long strip of Elmers glue. I let it set over night and then sanded it down till I obtained the level snugness I wanted. Worked for me.

Just addressed this last week. Have a rifle with a loose ramrod. Took out the barrel and ramrod, added a small layer of "shoe goo" in the last inch of the ramrod channel (breech end), let it dry. Now when the ramrod his almost fully inserted, it slides over the dried "shoe goo" and gets "sticky." Does not move forward under recoil, but is not difficult to pull out when needed. Invisible, effective, and cheap.

If your gun has a ramrod retaining spring, you could give it a bit of a bend to make it hold the rod tighter. If not, you could wrap a piece of rawhide or cordage around the barrel, tie it snug. That could help.
