How do you prime?

Is it? I've heard of an ember cooking off a charge as it's being poured down the muzzle, and heard caution about charging directly from a horn, but I've never heard of a horn exploding while priming.

Exactly. If you’ve already loaded powder, patch and ball down the barrel and nothing happened, how can priming be dangerous? The prime goes in a pan outside the barrel.

I use priming push primer 3to4 grains of 4f. Never failed in 10 years love flintlock rifles but use whatever your comfortable with. Good luck, Keep your powder dry friend

For a long time I used one of the brass primers around my neck. Many years ago I acquired from a friend two matching priming horns he made, one with the plunger I wear around my neck for matches, the other with a wooden stopper I carry in my bag when "going primitive." I mostly prime with 4f.

This is a very basic question. When shooting a flintlock rifle, at the range or on a hunt, how do you prefer to prime?
From your main horn or flask (yes, I know that is dangerous)?
From a small priming flask?
From a priming do-hicky that discharges 4 grains (is that enough or do you have to pump it 4 times)?
From a flask into a priming measure and into the pan?

When I'm reenacting the F&I War Rangers and Mountain Man I use a small Powder horn slung around my neck, when I'm on the Range I use a spring loaded powder measure tapped into a narrow hollowed out Deer Antler that gives a few grains measure with each push in the priming pan.

With my Cased set of FL ML Pistols (as pictured here on my profile) I use a small slighly larger than
thumb size Copper Powder flask.

I enjoy the many variables and tinkering BP ML's bring into our life, and I always "Prime with Gusto" !

Here's what I use . One push down in pan and drag it in a line. It's 3 grains of 4F from what I'm told. It's convenient and it works .

I use the same metered plunger that @kyron4 showed and like the doohickey that @SciAggie showed. One plunger charge only, less is best. I use 4F because I have plenty of it. But never had any problems using charge powder for prim

I use a homemade flat priming horn.

I'm making one myself here.

My personal favorite, far better than the push down that can leak or get clogged. Both ends unscrew for easy cleaning loading.

Yes, thanks. I had to call but they did have them in stock. I hope it works better than the plunger style. It alway jams up on 4F.

I for one would not judge what you use nor disagree with you, especially if you are using it because your dad's input has helped or encouraged you. Also you have peaked my curiosity. Show us.

Mine came from TOW too. I've had it about 4 years, never had a jamming problem. But I always tilt it up and push the plunger in and out after using. I do it out of habit, takes 1/2 a second and eliminates dribbles. I've used the same tip that TOW sales to make a flat horn primer and antler primer that I gave to my Sons.
