how do you unload your muzzleloader?

In Virginia, for purposes of hunting and transportation, a ML is considered "unloaded" if there is no cap on the nipple or there is no priming charge in the pan. As far as removing a load from a barrel, I have started using a ball screw to extract the ball (because I hate to waste the lead) then I stuff a wad of newspaper down on the powder and shoot it out (because I do not want to take a chance of contaminating the powder in my flask by putting it back in). There is also a CO2 powered discharger which can blow the charge out of the barrel without igniting it, but I have never used one.

So that's it.. Just pull the target. Great stuff..

But what happens when it doesn't do anything? :idunno:

typically to unload my rifle ill usually just shoot it, sometimes shoot it into something that the ball can be retrieved and used to remold a ball later to save ammo. i did have an intresting problem and solution that ill share. i own a ultra-hi, miroku made kentucky percussion rifle in 45 cal. the ramrod has both a loading and slotted cleaning jag , when running a dry patch through the dry barrel (my first mistake) the old slotted jag and tow jammed at the bottom of the barrel and broke off of the ramrod. after attemping to add some powder thru the nipple hole and trying to fire it out we poured very soapy water down the barrel til water ran all the way thru soakin the whole barrel, a quick blast from a air compressor with a rigged attachment ( pistol type air parts cleaner with electrical tape wrapped around the tip to make a more tight seal to the nipple hole) the newly lubricated tow and jag blasted out of the barrel safely to the floor... make sure you still are pointing the muzzle in a safe direction as the air can cause it to shoot out with amazing force. hopefully this expirence make help others as i am too new to this sport, but am truly in love with everything smoke-pole.

ou got it frosty , heck I even shot my ramrod out once by accident . what ever goes in has to come out.

I either 'pull' it with a ball puller or blow it out into a box of old towels in the garage with compressed air...I never shoot one out after a hunt and then needlessly have to clean a Flintlock.

PS:
Even with the huge cavity in the ball made by the ball puller thread, I save them for plinking at the range, and when seated with that cavity 'up' like you normally do with a spru, they drill the center of the target just the same as a new one.
