How far must you travel to hunt?

Very cool Jay, I lived in Portsmouth for decades. I never hunted Charles City, but I typically hunt Powhatan WMA, Amelia WMA and Little North Mountain up there near the Geo. Washington National Forest. I don't hunt the National Forest though, last time I did there was a rifle behind or up in every other tree

Originally I'm from the republic of Long Island N.Y. where shooting is prohibited, so I bought a hunting cabin in upstate N.Y. within a 3-hour drive from Long Island so I could hunt and fish in peace, now I live in Arizona 30 minutes and am there

Out the back door, and it's a mile of nothin'. I don't hunt beyond the mile because I have no 4x4. At my age I'll stay within dragging range.

650 miles. I had to move to FL from VA. Don't want a dead hog and the squirrels here are less than 2 bites. So I take my camper to the mountains for 2 weeks once per year. An awful way to live.

19 miles to the deer woods, and about a 3/4 mile walk. 27 miles to the squirrels woods. Rabbits used to be about 8 miles away, but since they decided to reintroduce coyotes, there are no more rabbits. I no longer hunt duck. The Memphis clubs have bought up the best land. We have few dove since the local peach orchards dried up.

I know of no Game Dept. that "reintroduces" coyotes. Who are "they" & when did "they" decide to reintroduce them? Coyotes introduce themselves about anywhere they want. To blame "they" is ridiculous!

That large Cassowary rack would render a life time supply of knife handles. ...........I have to go 5 mi. to a ladder stand , on the border af a large private hunting preserve. Satellite camera tells when the game passes, time and date stamped. Hard hunting. Last year , last day , we knew a big buck would pass by around a certain time. I patiently waited , but when the big boy was under the ladder stand , I was pi$$ing , with the wrong gun in hand. Old age sucks.

In the spring I'll drive as much as 20 hours to chase a turkey, but since I not a city dweller deer are usually off the porch.

A lot of Missouri has gone the way of Texas as far as private land goes. Lots of farmers have discovered the hunting lease. Luckily I bought my own little piece of heaven 30 years ago so I have a place to hunt. The bad news is a lot of the surrounding land I used to have permission to hunt has changed hands and I can no longer hunt past my fence. I live 2 hours away for now.

I live almost within hollering distance of Stykbow and we live in a hunting and fishing paradise, in my opinion. Even though I can sit on my back porch and watch squirrels, rabbits, deer, coyotes, foxes, skunks, groundhogs, hawks (not legal to hunt), geese, crows, doves, pigeons and a bunch of other critters, I prefer to drive 15 minutes up the mountain to hunt on a TWRA wildlife management area. Up there are turkey, bear and elk also.

Really envy those of you who can just step out the door and are hunting. I used to be able to drive 5-15 minutes up until the move into the city. It was great slowly getting old, however once old hits ya life ain’t so easy. Unfortunately old hit me quicker than the vast majority and only due to body waste-age. Heck I’m only in my early 50’s. Lol.
Anyhow I was thinking most folks on here would also be in city environments anymore, and would also be driving to hunt, but it appears not the fact. Thanks for the responses.

I live in a very small city more like a town and own my own hunting land I can drive to in 55 minutes. The drive is very beautiful and not on an interstate with heavy traffic. This is prime white tail deer hunting land surrounded by hundreds of acres of secluded wooded forest and creeks. We also have Turkey, squirrel, fox, coyote, bobcats and frogs! The travel is well worth it.

I can be in the woods in about 5 minutes, but it's very heavily used by hikers and such. All of my old haunts are full of houses now. Gotta get my own land.

If I'm at my cabin, I just have to step outside. From home, it's about a five minute drive. I'm very lucky.
