How heavy is too heavy?

I have two recurves of about 50 lbs pull and haven't used them for a couple of years. My arthritic fingers and hand won't allow me to keep control of the string being pulled while knocked. fingers magically slip from the string too soon and the arrow just goes where it wants to go. Sad ending for a good hobby. Don't care for crossbows.

I’m 33 and am getting too old to carry heavy guns like that. I like mine around 7 lbs. Maybe back when I was 20 I could lug a sixteen pounder but not in my old age.

Back when I was 33, I was shooting my 12 pound Hawken rifle offhand or my 11 pound Browning Mountain rifle. Now, I really prefer my 7 pound 36 caliber squirrel rifle. Yeah, I still try to lug around my 11 pound King's Musket.

Not all is lost , I use 24lb hoyt limbs fine for 40 yards , also have 34 & 48lb limbs but never use them . 48 lbs. No thanks Look up compound bow shooting , you hook up your wrist trigger to the string , so you pull the string back with your wrist strap, and when ready pull the trigger. I have used it on my recurve bow ,
I use a finger protector eBay China £12 very good , no pain in the fingers .

"How Heavy is Too Heavy" depends completely on context.

If it is a day at the range there might not be such a thing as too heavy. But if you are following dogs all day it will matter quite a bit. Too heavy doesn't matter in a blind. Unless you have to walk a mile of mud flats to get to it. Likewise too heavy is not an issue in a duck boat.
