two of my jars a stain have a foemie froff on top and the stain is like loose mud (as ca. knows) will it still come out like my samples of the two....there 7 and 8 that have this junk on top....all the rest are like a lake with no wind and clear not murky like the other two....i can redo the stains as i have what i used writing down with how much metal and of what and how much vineger....since 4/20 when i made the stains all the metal is still in the jars and polished so to say (no rust).........bob

Good Lord Bob, it's vinigar based wood stain, not rocket science! The more mud the better, shake it up and use it!

My present brew was a steel wool pad in a peanut butter jar full of cider vinegar that I started 2 years ago. I have done 2 rifles a smoothbore, two pistols and a half dozen ramrods and the brew was more concentrated with each gun.

They all came out a diferent shade, but who wants a rack full ot the same colors. That ain't natural! Let your hand built gun have it's own character.

The guns we do are not part of a mass production cycle where the corperation detirmines color based on cost effectiveness and convinces the consumer that's what the perfect gun looks like.

Are the cloudy ones the jars ye been soakin eggs in?

Vinegar & Iron Filing Eggs are great with Guiness.

Don't worry about the crud. The beauty of stains is that the wood will only take what it can and the rest you wipe off. The cruddy stains just act as "fillers" and give a smoother finish (No, not really, you probably ought to rack/decant anything with dissolved metal in it to prevent wiping particles into the stock, anyway). Run a bit through a funnel & coffee-filter or cheescloth/rag before using it if you are worried.

Stump, that is exactly the way I double filter my vinegar stain to remove any suspended solids. I like dark stained wood, but if one wants it lighter, might try dilluting to suit with distilled water.

it was just odd that two out of the 8 that i made had this sludge in the jar....i know it's not rocket science i just wanted to know why only two jars did this....i plan i filtering it after scraping the sides and shaking it before use cause of the metal particals in it  .............bob

I want to make a jar of this and I keep hearing "apple CIDER vinager", is that really just apple vinegar or am I missing something?

Yep, same thing. It's just that somewhere between apple and vinegar it becomes cider. Lot's of people drink fresh cider, which is towards the apple side of that spectrum. I prefer mine just a step away from vinegar (a.k.a. hard cider). :front:
