I was wondering if you could tell me about how many PSI's BP and Pyrodex maxs out at, I know that they are not progressive burning powders, like smokeless, and thus they will max out. Please let me know. Thanks!

It would depend on the grain size now wouldn't it? (Smaller grain size would yield a higher pressure?)

:imo:

BP firing a ball seems to max out at 2000 fps, except in calibers .40 and below, and only the first 25 diameters of barrel length count.

You can get you an average pressure from that, but peak is something else.

Pressure is usually measured in LUP's or CUP's which are only really good for comparing different loads, there's no convenient conversion factor to change LUP's to psi.

Back when Pyrodox was new, Hogdon ran some ads with a pressure curve plotted on a CRT screen. Problem was I don't remember if the pressure was scaled or not.

Lyman's blackpowder handbook shows a .50 cal load in a 43" barrel of 170 grs. 3F and a prb as attaining 2354 fps at 15000 cup.
I know that doesn't answer your question but that would be considered a very heavy load and 15000 cup is probably close to 20,000 psi.

When looking at the loading manuals you must also consider what they do not say!

I like to look at the old cartridge loading data for rounds that began as BP and have been converted to smokeless and the preasures must be kept very low for use in the old guns.

Most of the time they do not get enough preasue to crush the copper pellet and achirve a preasure rating until they reach what they consider max loads for these cartridges with smokeless.

If I can duplicate that load using BP it will be a safe load either loaded in a cartridge or poured down the muzzle.

CPU units are valuable as comparison tools, and when the load was not heavy enough to give a preasure rating I consider it the sign of a light to mild load.

Most suggested max loads, in pyrodex or BP, for our BP guns will not even register on the preasure scale.

The only BP guns I have ever seen that were blown up were either short started, had a barrel obstruction, or were loaded with smokeless powder. Most of the barrel makers only fear blowouts at dovetail cuts that leave less than .020" between the bore and the outside world. They recommend a minimum of .050"

I have done blow up tests myself and after that I refused to believe the stories about the shreaded barrels brought into my shop by "friends of the brouther-in-law" who blew them up with "just a standard load of BP!"

Just browsing thru the Lyman Blackpowder Handbook in the cartridge section I see where in a .45-120 with 110 grains of Goex Cartridge under a 480 grain slug gave them 23,200 CUP. The same load of Pyrodex RS gave 25,700 CUP.

A muzzleloading .45 shooting a 325 grain Buffalo HP Conical and 120 grains of Goex FFg gave 25,200 PSI while the same bullet with 100 grains of Pyrodex RS gave 31,500 PSI. :shocking:
