How do you apply a consistent amount of paste lube (Moose Snot, for example) to your patches? Melt and dip? Freeze and smear?

Don

I cut my patch material in strips about 18" long and apply a liberal amount of lube with an old butter knife. I then stack about five or so of the stips, fold in thirds or quarters, and then place in the microwave in a plastc bag for about 10 - 15 seconds. This warms up the lube so it spreads evenly throughout the patch material.

I put mine in a genuine period correct ziplock bag, squirt in a generous amount and massage them around til they are well coated, someimes adding a bit more lube for good measure.
Then I just store the whole gooey mess in the bag, in my shooting bag.
Seems to work- will do the same when I start to mix my own. Of course in Oz there is no chance of it all freezing solid

Don: I have been really cheap about patches. I buy the plain variety and lube them with NL 1000 myself.( That's the same as wonderlube, or bore butter.) I wipe the patch in my jar then put another patch on top of the lubed side of the first patch, then lube another patch and put that on top of the first two patches, making a large sandwich affair. I stick them in a Tedd Cash brask can- probably 40+ patches in all, and for get about them. While they sit together, in as little as 24 hours, the lube migrates through all the patches and is evenly disbursed. Now that i have a microwave, I will probably give them a zap in a plastic bag, just to keep the odor down in the kitchen. I have played around with cloth strips, and am going to use a putty knife, and ink roller, to lube up some strips to try with my smoothbore. But, I probably will stick with the pre-cut patches for my .50 cal. rifle, simply because I have used them for so long.

Like most ML shooters, I am a chronic " tester ", so if the lubed cloth strips work out well with my smoothbore, I will probably test them out with my rifle. Who knows I may switch yet. You also may want to try Dutch Schoultz's dry lube system, www.Blackpowderrifleaccuracy.com I think he has a good recipe for a lube, and a good way of creating a dry lubed patch that is not as messy to handle in the field or range as my wet lube patches tend to be. If you use wet lube, by all means, have towels, or a roll of paper towels on hand to clean up with. Otherwise, your pants and sleeve make lousy napkins.

Howdy Don,

I cut my patch material I get from my local sewing store and cut it into a bunch of 1" by 18" strips using a wheel fabric cutter. When I make Stumpkiller's Moose Snot I pour it into some 6" diameter tins with lids for safe keeping. I then place the tins on the electric stove on LO temperatureand melt it to an oil. Then i run my patch strips through the oil making sure it all gets a good coat and then I 'screed' off the excess oil from the material using a butter knife...(it is a little warm but not unbearable). Finally I place the oiled patch material in an old Altoids tin. Tip: You can fire your old Altoids tins to make them look old and to burn off the lables.

Take care!

I melt it, cut my own patches, round, and soak stacks of about 25, and then press out the excess between 2 boards. works with bore butter, olive oil and bees wax based lubes....for me!

Don:
I do my patches the same way Brett does. Just that I cut my patches square and only use Bore Butter for the lube.
