How to DE-case color???

Fred, Keith ~anybody....?
I am useing parts from one of those Spanish BP rifles...it has a case harden color lock.....but I want to brown it and age it with all the other steel parts.
So, what can I do to DE colorized it?

The rifle is almost together, and shaping up pretty nice......walnut stock, southern KY border type rifle. I am makeing the BP and TG......at jacobs~
My ankle is better today, but only let me have a couple hours at the bench.....and now it's "telling" on me......
Dang it........I have admit, I'm feeling my years tonight.....

Sand and polish it off.

Before you spend the time to sand it off,

Just soak it in regular white vinegar and the colors will come out of it leaving it a dull grey.

X2 on the pure vinegar. that made a GPR into a special rifle for me at one time. I "greyed" it complete "lock, stock, and barrel ... well not the stock but you get my meaning.

check on the greying progress tho every day as it can rust in the vinegar soak ... :idunno: ... don't ask :shocked2:

Those aren't case hardened, just dyed. Polish up nice with 400 wet/dry & buff with 0000 steelwool. Tom

If you plan on using a browning fluid, don't sand it with anything finer than 320 grit. Actually, IMO, 220 works even better.

The finer grit sandpapers often make the surface so smooth the solution can't get a good "bite" into the metal and the result will be blotchy.

Really ? well I've polished a BUNCH of them AND drilled them as well---not so hard, maybe yours is the real thing ????

Thanks everyone, I haven't tried anything yet......I'll try the scuff off method 1st, we'll see if it's died on~ and scuffing will need to be done to match the other aged metal...... :stir:

there is a very fine polish that will take off the CC. I recently used it on a hammer to make it look like the lock plate that was CC a few years earlier.

Zonie mentioned sanding, I take all my stuff down to 400 grit. It does take it long when browning or bluing to take a bite, but the end results are well worth it. If it is blotchy, you just quit too soon.

Vinegar or Birchwood Casey's blue and rust remover. Never use abrasives unless you absolutely have to.
