How to do a stitched Rawhide wrap??

Not sure if this should go here or accoutrements. So if this not the right place please move it to the right place.

The tittle of the thread pretty much says it all!! What I am trying to figure out how to do is just like this pic from the net!

The link takes you to a site by White Wolf. I am not a 100% sure but I think he is a member of this forum! According to the members list their is a White Wolf but not sure it is the same one!

I have tried to find a tutorial for the process and how the stitching is done but haven't been able to find one.

Does anyone know where there is such a tutorial on the rawhide wrap. Pictures would be nice but, even an explanation might help! Sometimes it is just easier to look at a diagram!!!

Not sure where to start. I do not know if the rawhide overlaps, I think the ends may be doubled under. Don't know how the stitching starts and finishes. How much to allow for the rawhide drying back, etc.
I am going to assume the last of the sinew is tucked to avoid a knot that is not comfortable to hand.

If anyone can shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated!!!

Try www,whitewolf1750.com. That is Don Brutons site and he has written a book on how to make a rawhide knife sheath. You can order it thru the website. Don and his wife (she is a silversmith and jewerly maker) are great folks. You won't be disappointed buying his book. I sure wasn't.

When I searched for rawhide wrap stitches that is one of the images under, images!

There is also one of Wicks that pops up on that same page!!

So no, I am not trying to promote anyone here I am just trying to learn "how to" on the handle wrap!! Before someone says anything,.........cough,....J--K....cough!! :idunno:

I am trying to learn about that handle wrap!!! What I want to know are the ends of the wrap rolled under, is there an overlap of the rawhide at the stitches, the stitching pattern and anything else that might be pertinent to the wrap!

I discovered the"baseball stitch" is also known as a "cross stitch pattern"! I also found a tutorial for the "cross stitch pattern"!

Although I have NOT done this YET, the concept I believe is to mold and stitch the rawhide while it is WET and pliable. It can be cut, stretched and trimmed to fit and then stitched up while wet also. As the hide dries and shrinks it will be tight, hard and a good solid "fix".
I would be careful just how much you "stretch" the wet hide because I don't know how much it will shrink upon drying, and possibly damage the stock your repairing.
You should be able to run the last stitches back into the center and out of of the stitching and trim while the hide is still workable. But be aware that if it gets wet again later it can "relax" or loosen up. So you may want to finish the rawhide with some sort of bees wax or waterproofing treatment once it is stitched in place. Like I said, i have not done this myself but I does not look too difficult and the only way I can think of as a process. It is one way rawhide is molded so there is my 2 cents worth.

A base ball stitch is different than the cross stitch shown. Base ball stitch the needle goes under the lip, then out and over to go under again on the other side. The stitches cross but underneath and appear as a V.

Base ball stitch because it lays flatter with a little less lace exposed to wear. Sent PM.
