Here they are, as purchased, actually usable as-is.

But what things are usually done re: the handle to achieve a finished-looking weapon?

Thanks,

Nothing needs to be done. NO tacks, beads, feathers, painting, carving, etc. are necessary.

If you are going to use them anything you add will only get in the way, and as you will find out if you actualy use them or throw them handles are kind of temporary

1st, what they said, nothing needs to be done, however. . . for about $50 you can get an armload of plain unstained unfinished 18" hickory handles from Track of the wolf, work on your carving, wire inlay, ect, ect. If it looks like most of my 1st trys have, you just put that handle on your hawk and throw throw throw. Lord if only all my mistakes had cost me less then $5 each  . . .

Those hawks are basically "Throwing Tomahawks" or made to use around camp. __ Sharpen the edges and use them as is! __ No "Foo Fraws" needed!

Those handles work like a pick axe handle. As it becomes loose, pound the head further up the shaft. Those are meant to be tools and a shiny pipe-ax finish wouldn't add to their usefulness.

All said already so true.
There is a rule of life that says, the fancier a 'hawk handle, the sooner someone will play 'handles' with your beauty and ruin it. :shocked2: Never fails.
Personally, I never saw the fun in that (not) 'game'.

A good rubbing with BLO will keep the handles from cracking as readily. And is historically correct! :idunno:

I built my own hawk and then hacked a handle out of a piece of vine maple with a hatchet and a hunting knife. I wanted it to look like the handle had been replaced with only the hawk head for a tool. I have been very pleased as it is the toughest handle I have owned!

Okay...I give. What the heck is the game of "handles" ?
It's best plated with a large group.
First man (kids usually) throws and sticks his hawk in the block.
Then the next guy try's to hit his handle AND stick his hawk, than another and another,,,,

There generally ain't a winner per say, cause everyones handles get pretty beat up or down right ruined.
But it is fun,, :haha: when ya get 7-8 hawks all piled up on the block.
I've got 11 hawks, only 2 of which I bought. Darn Kid turned into a pro and won all the others.
We use a CrazyCrow Heart Hawk that has plenty of battle scars for the game, they have a larger handle than common.

Maybe it is because I have never been rich. But, I do not consider purposeful destruction and waste to ever be fun.

I don't know There were some archery shoots where it was down right fun knocking the fletching off the poor sports arrows. One guy wouldn't even compete when he saw I was in his group.
