I guess I'm going to try some. I can't think of any other way to go about it. Going to hunt an area where I can shoot hogs and turkeys and don't want to shoot gobbler with a .62cal. round ball.
So I'm going to take a couple of quick loads of turkey shot & powder and a few round balls.
If I hear a turkey gobble I'll load the turkey shot..not much of a problem there. But I'll have to be slick to load up and get shot at hogs. Many times though I've eased up on them undetected and should have time to back off and load up.
This is a good reason to build a .40cal rifle.

Make a good point for my German Cape Gun Rifled one barrel and smooth on the other. Light and handy to carry. Now just have to find a place to use it.
Fox

Try putting a wad of tow with the ball on top and ram the whole works down the tow should hold the ball in place, this should be quicker than the patch and ball, you could carry the guns already charged with an over powder card to keep the powder in place. and the accuracy should be fine, try some practice shots first

I hadn't thought about pre-charging it..that will make a big difference..Thanks for the tip.

Mr. silverfox,
If you have the time, would be interested in hearing more of your German Cape Gun (new thread?). Photos perhaps?
Best Wishes

I'll be doin good to hit the hog in the head.

This is when it pays to have two guns...one with a sling.... Not that you needed any justification for buying another gun mind you....

Interesting concept.

In an effort to keep it simple I use the same powder and wad combination for shot and ball

I use an un-patched .610 ball.

This would take it to the next level.

That being said,

I will continue my quest for a double flinter,

which will get me to the same place and gives me an excuse to get another ML

Jeremiah Johnson carried two long guns. :hmm:

I've always wanted a swivel breech for that very reason, shot in a smooth barrel and ball in a rifle. Seems like that'd be the best dang meat gun a man could have.

CoyoteJoe showed me how to knock your last shot card or over card sideways in your barrel so you can dump shot than reload with a ball, I praticed this a bit and it works quite well. just use your rod and hit the side of your card and it will bend a bit, I also use half a card.

:hatsoff:

Would it be practical to load with shot and ball?

I thought about it but dang ouch, heavy load and I have never tryed it but am not sure about accuracy

The combo load might not be leagal for some game in some areas?

Your absolutly right.
Our regs say a "single" projectile in the bore for large game.Would a load of shot and ball even have the same point of impact as just a single ball?

Thats what I was thinkin.Never tried it so I wasnt really sure.Might work at close range incase ya seen somethin tryin to eat ya

yup, I would prabably want buck and ball or just two balls. PRB that is.
I need to fart around with with buck on ball fer grins.
It's dumpin snow here so I gots nothing to do how bout over there?

Cloudy and rained last night.I was expectin snow but aint got none.Still got lots in the mountains.I might have to break out my snow shoes just for some fun in the hills.
