Do you folks use round balls, conicals or the sabots when you hunt deer ? Are you getting good results with what you use ?

Regards, Vic

I only use round balls for all bug game hunting. I hunt large western mule deer. Have never had a problem with them as long as you put the ball where it needs to go.

To me that question depends on a couple factors. What caliber am I using? If it is a smaller caliber like .40, I'd probably go with a conical for the added weight. Why? I feel I'm a proficient shooter but I also know a misplaced shot is a possibility. That's why it's called hunting and not killing. The added weight helps if the shot is a little forward or behind.

However, when I'm using a .54 a roundball in my opinion if perfectly fine for me. Provided it's a reasonable distance and shot to take.

The other issue is how good a shot are you? If your suffering for poor eye sight and need your shots close I'd go with the heavy conical. If your a great shot then use the lighter rb. It's basically an individual thing.

I shoot a .54 cal Lyman GPR I built about 20 years ago. One hunting season about 5-6 years ago I had a disheartening experience shooting a round ball and shortly thereafter obtained a "hunter barrel" with a fast twist and have been hunting with conicals ever since. Perhaps I over reacted and should try hunting again with round balls.

To make a long story short, one past season I was hunting and took about a 75 yd shot at a doe. She gave the impression she took a hit in the chest from what I could see through the smoke. No hair, no blood, nothing ! I and several others looked around the area for a good hour and a half before we gave up and con't hunting.

So far, the longest shot I've taken is about 100-125 yds at a nice doe and she went down right now.

Roundball uses round balls

patched round ball .... that's what I shoot at every shoot I go to... (and all that's allowed) so I can't see changing anything when I go hunting and I've had great results.. last year and this year, they dropped right there,do a bit of damage too..RC

A patched roundball has always done the job for me. I use.54cal for whitetails and .62cal for whitetails and bigger critters. I took this moose with a roundball out of my .62

I am shooting a 50cal. and using round balls. Last years deer went straight down with a 15yd. front on shot to the chest and broke the spine. This years deer was 70yds. broadside with a lung shot. Traveled about 50yds. max. My daughter took her deer with 50cal. round ball and a 20yd. shot to the back of the head. It went straight down. The one recovered ball went from .490 dia. to a flattened .700. Weight of ball went from 177gr. down to 164gr.

I use a 50 cal for hunting deer and elk and use a round ball and 80 gr of FFg and have never had any problems. They have all gone around 100 yds or less(mostly less).

Exclusively round balls lately. Maxi-Hunters and R.E.A.L.s in the past. I've had round balls drop deer instantly, but I am mindful of their more limited range and keep even the ideal conditions shots under 100 yards.

I have come to favor the .54 round ball for whitetail, though I can't say it does anything the .50 can't. I just like the added weight and margin for error of the larger ball. Confidence in your equipment is important for hunting.

50 cal patched round ball....

can even point out the tree I unloaded it into!!
(Wasn't a good ML season) :shake:

Roundballs,Just Roundballs and nothing but good results with them.A poorly hit deer will run with anykind or bullet in them.IMHO

I have shot several deer with prb 50 caliber and my son got his first this year with one. They all eneded up in the freezer :winking:

I have used both bullets and balls, they both work just fine.

It is all about shot placement!

Lately, I find myself shooting more round balls.......only problem that I have with them, is that they keep getting bigger.
