i would avoid the conical for a different reason then the others have stated (unless i missed it).

to get a conical to shoot as accurate as a round ball you need to get it to similer velocities. this means heavy charges in a rifle and even heavier charges in a short barreled pistol. i doubt a conical will shoot well with anything less then 40 grains of 3F. the recoil will be impressive to say the least. the gun itself might not be able to hold up against the heavier recoil leading to a cracked handle.

my lyman plains pistol shoots great with 25 grains of 3F and a .490 ball. im beting at close range this load would be plenty lethal on a white tail. if i was shooting further then say 20 yards i might load it to 30 or 35 grains.

between my schedule and the rain I am starting to get upset, I still have not had a proper shooting date with my pistol
Sure, I have launched some lead out of it just for giggles but the oportunity to just shoot and shoot and shoot is eluding me.

That's what the kitchen window is for. keeps you out of the rain and you can use the table for stability lol. When the significant other comes looking to see where all the noise is coming from hide it under a dish cloth and look innocent as you look up from the cook books. worked for me a couple times when I was out at the ranch house :blah:

its a real shame ya dont live closer to me. id get ya out shooten more often. heck ive been going every weekend for the past month. i work on sat but i shoot almost every sunday.

I would venture a guess that a lot of the old CVA pistols used barrels which were cut from their 1:48" rifle barrels. While most pistol barrels use a faster twist, I know a lot of folks that get very acceptable results from a 1:48 twist.
