got a few flintlocks here at home between me my old man and brother we got 7 i shoot a pa hunter its a 66 twist but it shoots the hornady great plains bullets unbelievably well at 100 yards with 95 grains of 3fg goex behing it love the gun thompsons in my opinion best all around gun, lyman makes the strongest locks, and are good overall, my brother shoots a cva it shoots good enough, looks good camo/nickel and is cheap $140, i have had absolutely no good luck with traditions guns see you in the woods we hunt near tionesta in nw. pa
 
That over the snow thing has been passed around a lot, but i think that if you actually examined some of the stuff laying on the snow, you will find it is burned powder residue and not unburned powder.
That and the info Dixon was giving out sounds like an old myth to me. If 70 grs is the most .50 can use then why does the velocity go up with a heavier charge?
