After reading the results of the survey for October I was wondering which of us will be hunting with matchlocks this season. I have been hunting with mine as long as I have had it and have done pretty well, I just wondered who else was taking out their matchlock. I may even try with the gonne this year.

I havent used mine yet, but iplan to next week. What have you got with yours? Our early muzzleloader deer season is in right now in Pa. I plan on taking my matchlock small game hunting. It is a 20ga..A question for you, do you keep your match burning the whole time ,or do you wait until you see a game animal and then light the match?I thought about waiting and then lighting up and putting the match in the cock jaws.I havent tried it yet.Do you still hunt or stalk game with yours? You are the only hunter I have read about in this section of the forum.Curious......

Not surprised some of the parts aren't plunb-blue wading around in that snow stuff up noth there! But...

Also thought you might mention some of your formula for mixing other scents in the match soak to keep the critters from objecting to the odor of the slowmatch. As for me, got to save a bit more lunch money till I can get a matchlock...probably by spring.

I hunt with mine almost exclusivly (unless a heavy downpour then I take a flinter) and to date my harvest with it has been; 4 deer, 1 turkey, 4 coyotes, 5 porcupines, 4 wild dogs, several bunnies, several squirrels, at least 8 ducks, 7 geese, and 6 grouse. I both still hunt and stalk with it and leave the match burning all the time. I have found that the smell of the match doesn't scare the critters much and in some cases even seems to attract them. I have also played around a bit with scented matchcord (mix some clove oil or anise oil in my matchsoak) but it seems unnessacry. The biggest thing is to take it easy and tend your match to make sure it desn't go out. I have written a few pieces on hunting with a matchlock, most recently in the July issue of "Guns" Magazine July 2004 issue. There is evn a group of us in the Great Lakes that are reenacting/trekking as 17th century New France personas. I am headed out tomorrow afternoon for another turkey (Fall season in MI) and deer season is jus around the corner.

Hello, new here and located in Waterford, MI. Interested in matchlock, snaphaunce hunting, shooting, etc. Looking to find one to try out. Does your group have get togethers?

I'm planning to hunt deer with my dutch matchlock next weekend. hopefully this first time will be as memorable as "other" first times.

Mastadon,
Thus far we are a pretty disorganised group but hopefully that will change before too long a couple of us have discussed doing a unit based around the years just before Radisson and Grossilles up here. I am just a bit north of you in the Flint area (Grand Blanc) there are a few others that are around the Detroit area a couple in the Straights area with the rest in Wisconson and Minnesota. Drop me an email and well have to see what we can do to get together and burn some rope or something. My email is below.
