Hi,
A retired network engineer, NASA contractor, I returned to the zen of shooting about 8 years ago with a Thompson, 50 cal, cap, rifle. Being in charge of everything from powder to projectile on a shot-by-shot basis, wonderful ... except for the butt shaped bruises.
A quick stop at the old Gander Mountain and a butt stock pad solved the bruising. From Dixie I got a front cross sight and rear peep. In effect, a 1x scope which works great. But the synthetics and those plastic jacketed bullets ... UGH! After 2-3 shots, it was barrel cleaning time.
Eventually I got some black powder and went with patched ball for snapping-in and lead conical to reach out and hit the center. Very happy, I put it away for another hobby. Then my brother gifted me a flintlock, 50 cal, trader pistol.
I checked the local sources and they barely have cap-and-ball supplies and only synthetic powder. My previous source, JR's on Jordan Lane, went out of business. Still I have my Thompson rifle, powder, ball, and conical.
After reading the appropriate forums, I'll post my questions there. Meanwhile, I'm glad to be here.
