Maybe it's time for a
"Doe in heat" type scent lure.
Had a 4x5 a few years ago come in hot with Tinks 69,,
In early Oct? Our deer here won't start rutting till Nov.

Matt nailed a 4 pointer this morning. We have it in the bed of the pick up icing down. My neighbor came over and coached us on how to gut the critter.
We took some pictures but I will let Matt post them.

Story coming later.

Thanks guys! Without your coaching and advice this hunt would not have been successful.

Excellent! Thats the way to hang in there an get the job done! How much did he weigh?

We didn't weigh it so I don't know how much it weighed. But it was a strugle to get in the bed of the pick up and Matt is a big boy...

Here are the pictures:

This morning I woke up before Matt and tried a couple times to wake him up as sunrise was coming. Well he wouldn't wake up so I said screw him I am going out. Well I stalked the property and was looking around for signs of any deer and coming up empty.
So I decided to go try wake up Matt again. This time he woke up and got out of his tent. He said he was going to hit the outhouse and make his way to the pond. I told him I had been outside for the last hour and I needed a coffee and he was more than welcome to go ahead without me.
I have an expresso machine so the coffee is quik to brew. About half way through the cycle I heard a bang from his long rifle. So I grabed my Hawken and ran out the house to go see if he needed a hand. Before I found Matt I came up on a buck laying down in the trail and just looking around. I knew it was the deer Matt musta shot as it was laying in the open. I stayed where I was ready to put the deer down if it tried to get up and yelled for Matt. He came down the hill yelling he couldn't find it. I yelled back I have it in my sights. As he got about half way to me I saw the buck lay down his head and I knew it was over.
My neighbor heard the shot and came out to see if we got something, which we confirmed. He offered to coach us on the guting if we wanted. I imediatly told him we were a pair of greenhorns and we could use the help.
After we got it guted we took the pictures, loaded it into the bed of the pick up got it the 200 yards to the house, hosed it down and iced him good. Took him to the butcher and thats all she wrote.

Swweeeet. It's nice when you can sleep in a little and still fill your tag. Was the shot broadside, quartering to or away? Was there an exit wound, if so, where?

Congratulations...BEWW

That's a good buck...I forgot out west you only count one side.
When you'd previously mentioned a 4 pointer I was picturing a smaller, 2x2...that one in the photos is what we'd call an 8 pointer here on the east coast.
You're a very generous host Cynthialee...hoping you tag one next...doe, buck, doesn't matter !

hiya all, thanks for the congrats.

as yall know ive been stay at cynthialee's place since Sat. its a been a ton of fun scouting around her property, she has some amazing land!

as for the deer, it was a broad side shot at what i believe was around 50 yards (i need to go check). there was no exit wound or blood trail for that matter! i was just following the way i saw the deer run when i heard Cynthia yell up to me that she found it. i believe i hit the shoulder bone which is why it didnt pass threw.
the load was:

.490 ball
.015 wonder patch
a wool wad
90 grains of schuetzen 3F

im sticking around here to help Cynthia get her deer. expecially after seeing how tough it was field dressing the deer.

good hunting all!
-Matt

Another good reason to take a youngster hunting,,,they just cant wait to get armpit deep in the dressing of the deer,,,I'am just as willing to let them hone their skills......good for the drag out to.....Don't you just love youthful giddy up and go?????.
The pictures speak for them selves!!!!!! :rotf: :idunno: :slap:

Matt has been a good guest and he is decent enough company for a young man.
He has been rather knowledgeable about his muzzel loaders and I have learned a thing or two from him.

We will give the wild life the rest of the day off and head out tommorow morning.
After getting the work done I am tuckered out. In a good way though. I think I have had a silly grin pasted on my face since I saw that buck in the trail.

He was nice enough to expire in a place we were able to get the pick up into so the drag was only about 10 feet.

The kid down talks his marksmanship skills but I think the shot placement on his deer tells the real truth. He shot standing, off a monopod and not awake not longer than 10-15 minutes.

He was using a long rifle. I swear if he leans forward with the thing he might end up in the next county. :rotf:

It's always a good thing when the deer drops in a nice spot instead down in a gully! Nows it's Cynthialee's turn! Thats looks like a real nice deer, 8 pointer where I come from  .

This is such an awsome story from you two
To think back on all the questions and solutions found here at this place,,
And the stuff that lead to this day,, well it just get's me all,,

Your turn, Cynthialee, and it's good of Matt to stick around for you.
I hope you fill up soon.

I have to agree, this has been one of the best threads ever. Cynthialee and Matt have been great on giving us updates. Now to complete this adventure we all need to give Cynthialee all our good Karma so she can get her deer also . A lot of us still have a month or more before we can even start hunting. So it's been nice to hear a few success stories( Idaho Ron,and Grndhntr, Matt85) before we get our chance.
