I was reading with interest the posts on teflon ticking patches and caught mequileter's very good post on BreakFree CLP.
He let's the teflon settle out of the BreakFree and uses it on ticking roundball patches.
Why not use powdered teflon that I've seen on the market?
We could brew up Stumpy's Moose Snot and add powdered teflon and it's be so slick it would slide off itself! :what:
Do any of you intellectual, highly educated types know whey this woudln't work?
'Nuther question. Does teflon burn or melt from the heat of black powder burning?
Stumpy, you are one of the resident chemists here, any thorts?

maxiball
very good question!! i hope you get lots of feedback as i'm getting ready to brew up some of stumpy's moose snot.
where can i get this teflon powder?????
snake-eyes  :hmm: :)

Some years ago when I was into line shooting and useing teflon coated pillow ticking patching that needed to be hammered down the bore. I also tried a product called "Tef Gel" which is a penetrating gel lubricant with teflon. It is distributed by Lawson and for industrial use only. I purchased some through a local garage. The label states it is stable from -30F to +530F. The product also contains hexane, paraffinic petroleum distillates, propane, isobutane, butane and petrolatum. Soon after I "discovered" flintlocks, spit, and bear grease/beeswax and never touched the Tef Gel or teflon coating ticking again. :)

Waaaal,

I suppose if it coats pots and pans it should be fairly heat tolerant. But, I can't figure which critter it comes off. I seen Mouflon sheep at the Syracuse zoo - always did admire them huge horns and get lots of stares when I pretend to mount my rifle and say "bang" as I watch them.) I guess Teflon must be related to them, maybe closer to them little Chamois they use the plews to cut car buffer rags with.

Have at it. I got my brew down to three ingredients and that's workin fer me. As a rule, I avoid anything in my M/L shooting that has a copywrite on the name. :: Dacron, Teflon, Rayon, etc. If my new rifle don't like Moose Snot, as some seem destined to, then I'll go back in the kitchen and rattle them pots and pans. I gotta spend some time shootin and running ball. Time to fill the arsenal with home-spun R.E.A.L. conicals (I'm gonna give them a whirl this year instead of the Maxi-Hunters) during the regular gun season. We'll see how Moose Snot does as a conical lube. I've never tried casting anything but round balls, and I'm having fits getting all the ribs formed and the base flat & completely filled in. I think the lead/mold has to be run hotter than with RB.

I use CLP Breakfree as a long term coating, inside & out, when I'm putting infrequently fired guns away. Good stuff.

where can i get this teflon powder?????

One heaping jar of powdered teflon coming right up...

Powdered Teflon

The other route would be to cook up the mix in your wife's teflon pot and then scrape it out with your tomahawk blade when its done... (don't leave the tomahawk within her reach if yo do this)

I work in teflon extrusion using PTFE teflon powder for coating silver wire used in military and high tech applications. The boys at Dupont have forwarded various warnings about the stuff for when heat isa applied-- if it catches fire and you breathe the fumes or if you smoke after handling(without washing hands in between) you can get what they call "teflon flu". I had two coworkers get this when the wire caught fire in the curing ovens, it's very unpleasant albiet a temporary affliction. One woman said it felt like the worst case of flu she ever had combined with her bones aching. It makes your entire body-muscles, bones, organs-- spasm with pain for a day or two. I really don't recommend putting down the bore of a muzzleloader, the temporatures are high enough to cause trouble; and a good smoke after throwing a handful of PTFE in your "moose snot" might put you down for a day or two.

I suppose though as far as shooting it, outdoors dissipates the smoke quickly, so perhaps no danger there but I do recommend washing your hands thoroughly after handling it.

Good luck! :boohoo:

Thanks Ashelocoa:

That's why we brainstorm these things ahead of time, only in Maxiball's case, its a brain-drizzle...

Musketman.
Verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry funnny. Ha. Ha. :blah:

But that's EXACTLY why we brainstorm. Thank you sir for the verrrrrrrry good heads up on teflon. I had no idea.
I ain't going to do it, ain't worth the risk. My hats off to yee.

I know it's old fashioned, but of course there's always pillow ticking and bore butter ::

Yeh, but inquiring minds don'cah'know.
By the way...what's bore butter?
I think brewing up yer own is almost as much fun as shooting.
I cast roundballs and bullets too, but would rather sit in a cactus patch than run ball.

CAUTION: funny picture below, viewer discretion is advised

Bore Butter is a T/C lube, though it's not to be confused with Bore Margarine...

Ok, I just gotta ask, what the hell is moose snot? Do I actually have to go and pick a moose's nose while he's sleeping? Will he get ****** off and stomp me into dust?
Just wonderin' :shake: :winking: :haha: :blah:

bdarin: Yes the moose will ruin your whole day.
Moose snot is a great lube cooked up by our own chemical guru Stumpkiller.
4oz. castor oil, an oz. of beeswax ( or two if you like) and about an oz. of Murphy's Oil Soap.
You can play with the formula to get lube as har, or soft as you want.
Castor oil is a great metal protectant, beeswax gives it body and is in itself a great preservative, and the Murphy's binds the other two together.
This is a good general purpose bullet and patch lube and great for hemorroid itch to boot.
Speaking of boots, it will water proof leather too and will also serve as an undercoating for your pick up truck.
It is also very good for chapped hands, but I'd advise against it for chapped lips after you've used it as a hemeoroid relief agent.
Bawwwwwww-hawwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I really, crack me up!

Ok, I just gotta ask, what the hell is moose snot?

Moose milk has become a generic term for a liquid patch lube and powder solvent. I wanted a solid, grease type lube - hense: "Moose Snot". The first one was actualy thicker and I called that "Moose Marrow" (A good conical lube). Search on Lube Wars #1 for information ad nauseum. I have settled on 8 parts castor oil, 2 parts bees wax and 1 part Murphy's Oil Soap - with a teaspoon added after the stuff is melted together with a final good stirring after it's removed from the heat.

Howdy,
The discussion about teflon being put into a gun barrel and then heated to a high temp. does not sound appealing to me. :youcrazy: I do not want to take a chance on ruining a good barrel with a man made material. I don't know what benefit is being looked for, whether it is ease of loading or is it for accuracy. I have been shooting a .54 cal with a spit patch for a good while now and do not see a big change from a .530 ball and a .535 ball with a .015 cotton pillow ticking patch in an offhand match. :results:

I don't use spit because spit has salt in it...

Saline is part of saliva...

Salt and metal over time = rust...

I get mine from a place that sells salt-free saliva. :)

Regards, sse
