:haha: Another project! I had been tossing around the idea of making a powder horn for my Turkey gun. I do have the Shebly book but just never really got into this until making the Pulverin horn. Well I was handed this horn, my father got in a box of stuff he bought at an auction. Looks about perfect to me, right hand carry and looks like it will end up a 9"or 10" horn after trimming. I wonder if it is the right kind of horn to use though, about the first half is almost transparent, I can actually see my finger inside of it when I put a light on it even before smoothing it up.

Its looks like a beef horn. Will work,I have made several out of beef horns. They don't have the color that diary horns do. But after you get it scraped you probably will be able to see your powder and see how much is in it. When you get the base end ready for the wood plug, take the horn and press it on a foam plate, this will give you a good pattern for your wood. I usually cut the pattern till it will fit in the horn end, then trace on the wood. Saves a lot of work. Dilly

Looks like you may have enough thickness to smooth the larger end and gain some more length. It really doesn't matter if the body is perfectly smooth.

I've never taken them down really thin, but the only time I've had problems is with old horns I recovered from skulls in the desert. Lots of sun and age, and though they looked fine, they wanted to chip when I engrailed them with a chisel. No problems with splitting other than that.

Holy crapper...a lot of file work to get this where its usable. Wouldn't be so bad I guess if I didn't have to take so many breaks. Looks like I'll be able to use most of the horn though. Should be about 1/2" or so I'll need to trim from the big end.

I don't have one! /crys :haha: I got the bulk of it, just trying to get as much of the growth rings out as I can now.

I've got a horn that looks much like the one you showed but with more extensive "growth rings" along its length. Personally, I'm not going to worry much about it and leave it more "rustic". I will however remove as much of the loose/scaly material as possible.

Yeah I'm going for a rustic used look myself. There are a couple of spots left of the growth rings I figure to leave on it and a few other marks that I think will look good when its done. I'm just smoothing it up now. Will post a pic when its about where I want it.

Heya Swampy..please post progress pics...I've never actually made a horn and was thinking of doing one. What book would you suggest? I have about 6 blanks to choose from, some polished..some in the rough. Scrimshaw is somthing I would like to attempt, I have a couple of books but they're vague.

I'm sure there are others but I just have this book here, http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Cate...tId=1&subId=12&styleId=39&partNum=BOOK-R18CPH

The horn cleaned up pretty nice, still rough I need to sand with finer grit still. I have some cherry left over from my rifle build I figure on using for the plug and I will be following pretty close to the horn the Shelbys use for an example as far as the butt plug and using the horn its self to secure the horn strap. F&I style. Not sure yet how I'll do the spout.

That's starting to shape up Swampy.

Hey just a suggestion. When I work with deer antler besides to be used as knife handles(I also make antler Whistles) I like using went and dry sand paper. If you use the paper wet it sort of desolves the antler and leaves a nice finish besides being much faster..But you brobable already know the wet sanding part.

Ok, I really can't do much more with the Pulverin until Roy gets back to me on the spout parts. So this is keeping me busy until then. Best part is getting to use the lathe again. :haha: I'm stumbling along not really knowing what I'm doing :haha: but it seems to be coming along nicely. Surprised myself by drilling the hole right the first time! I just heated the base and fitted the plug to it.

Progressing nicely Swampy! Looks like you got plenty of meat in the throat area to do what ever you like. Keep us posted.

Ah man, you didn't clean up all the dust and shavings just for us, did you?

Excellent work, even if you are lots neater than I am. :hatsoff:
