I Need A Knife (F & I Era)

The only "old timey" knife I've got is part of a package Daniel Winkler was selling about 10 years ago: A fire-making set-up in a nice leather waist-bag (quilled and decorated a little by Karen Shook)with a sheath on the back holding a nice 8-inch combination knife and fire-striker. The 4 inch blade is handy, and the curved haft is in the shape of a flint striker. All in all a pretty cool deal, but certainly not pc at all. I'm looking for a decent waist knife, blade length 6 to 10 inches. Winkler makes a superior product, but my coffers are low. Even if I was flush the wait is too long at this point in this craftsman's career. I'm not so destitute to be satisfied with some cheapo plain-jane deal. I can probably fly in the low to mid 100's, maybne a little more, especially if the product warrants it. C'mon, fellas, I'm aching for that perfect knife to take in the woods come November!

You mite want to check the links section of this
forum. The knife makers there sometimes have knives
made up for sale. You mite find one there to fit your
needs.

Mike Beathe is at Rendezvous. He has a web site. Google Beathe knives to find it. I plan on asking him to make me a knife soon. I am no expert but he has various styles and they look good.

John Donelson made me the 5" knife in the center from a drawing I sent him - based on one in Madison Grant's collection - from coulter steel set in a whitetail crown for $60. It's simple and what ye call yer "butt ugly", but it holds a superior edge and is my most used knife.

He'd be well in your budget. He'll turn out a simple knife in a few weeks as his spare time allows.

i highly reccomend Matt from www.mlknives.com he makes some beautifull F&I knives and they are all hand forged by him, also does all his own leather work. Matt feeds his family by making knives as he is a full time blade smith. he also sells on ebay under the name malc26. i have many of his knives in my opninon they can't be beat for the price. i can send ya some pic's of mine if you want to see some.

Most folks have suggested many great knife makers. The OP need to research them, contact the knife makers and make a decision after deciding what knife style pleases them .... Since he is wanting a F&I war knife , is he wanting one with french influence like a trade knife or scalper ?? There were quite a few different styles made in the 18th century .... tough decision on his part.
