What would you concider to be the ideal length for a ramrod?

Barrel length?

1 inch longer than the barrel?

2 inches longer than the barrel?

More?

I want a slightly longer rod so as I can get a grip on it when the cleaning jag is at the breech area...

Opinions?

I like mine about 1"-1 1/2" longer than the barrel. Makes it easier to get a hold of if you need to retrieve a patch or pull a ball.

Whatever is required for you to remove the RR.

Mine sticks out a minimum of inch and half past end of muzzle. Another thing I have started doing is to groove the exposed RR end, not only does make it for a good purchase when removing, but circular grooves also makes for a good cleaning jag between shots.

One thing I should add, the only time I use the ram rod is whenever I do not have the larger and stronger wiping stick (range rod) available. I do not like to put more stress or wear on a gun's RR than is absolutely necessary.

A long "range rod" with a ball on top for the range;

Barrel length for hunting...when I screw on a jag, it's long enough to use no problem...and if it should get hung up for some reason, I carry a small T-handle in the pouch;

Ramrod- about 2" longer than the barrel. I can get a good grip on it for swabbing or wiping, and enough room for multiple marks for different powder loads. If I absolutely have to, can even use a ball puller and have some grip area left over.

Mostly I use segmented brass rangerods that are about 8-10" longer than the barrel. Since almost all my shooting is done at a range, I have dedicated holders for wood ramrods, carbon-fiber rods, and the brass range rods.

I like the rifle rod to be 1-1 1/2 inch longer than the barrel.
My range rods are at least 6-8 inches longer with a good handle.

Well folks ya know the old saying a picture is worth a 1000 words so in interest in saving 3000 words I took some pics of my setup.The 1st pic shows what my ramrod looks like in the thimbles of my gun.

The 2nd pic shows it in the barrel without the jag but showing the extended jag I carry in my possibles. It was made for me by my mentor and gunsmith who built my gun. And was designed tapered behind the jag head thus allowing the use of most any size patch. It lets an oversized patch lay in closer to the jag so as not to hang up.

The 3rd pic shows how much ramrod I have to work with when the jag is on the ramrod.

I really like this system it works great for me.

Well if any of you want a jag like that my mentor and good friend makes them. I'll have to check with him for what he'd part with em for. Send me a private message with your e-mail and I'll get back to ya!

I cut mine so that the base of the jag is even with the end of the barrel. Gives me enough rod to grip, but the rod doesn't hang out there in space.

I like mine to be flush with the muzzle or slightly behind it when stored in the thimbles. When I need it to be longer for cleaning, I have an extended jag and a T-handle either one or both of those accessories gives me enough length for any situation.

I rarely use my regular ramrod for cleaning anyway; so the ramrod really only needs to be long enough to seat a patched roundball on top of the powder.

TC carries them in .45, .50, and .54cals...other suppliers too

Hey Roundball do they have them that long and tapered like that?

Not saying they don't I've just never seen them 3.5" to 4" long.

Is that a centerfire shotshell you used for size comparison? :nono:
Shame on you for posting that on this forum :blah:

I also use the t-handle, and my rod is just a bit shorter than the barrel. When the shortest possible jag is installed it is even with the end of the barrel. For a range rod, I use a segmented aluminum shotgun cleaning rod. :thumbsup:
