Hello all,

I received this rifle/pistol set years ago as a gift in a little less than working order. Pin missing on the pistol lock with a weak mainspring and the rifle is missing the mainspring/unknown other internals. I believe both to have been built from kits of some sort decade's ago. I intend to finally restore the two, however I am unsure what locks are on these firearms and can find no brand markings other than "Made in Spain" on the rifle. (Please see attached pics)

If anyone on the forum might be able to point me in the right direction I would sincerely appreciate it!

The pistol is certainly a CVA lock, basically the same one Traditions still uses and Deer Creek is your best bet for parts. The rifle lock doesn't quite look like either the old or newer style CVA locks I am familiar with. Wrong exterior shape and the inside of the plate is different. What does the stamping visible in the one pic say? Might help narrow it down. If all else fails Dixie or Track of the Wolf might have a mainspring close enough to adapt to it

Thank you so much for your reply! OK that makes sense for the pistol. The stamping on the rifle lock just says "Made in Spain". I have been trying to narrow down by looking at old kits etc. as well. The rifle looks the closest to a CVA Hawken of what I've found on Deer Creek but like you said, there are some differences that just aren't right. I cannot find a brand name on either firearm either. The pistol looks very much like a Kentucky Pistol kit by CVA but the nose cap is missing and not sure if the length is correct or what type of nose cap would go on mine. Would you have any suggestion on where to look for that as well? Thank you again for your help!

Earlier Spanish made muzzle loaders used a round heeled lock of that style. CVA versions I've owned had cast in "engraving" but an old Ultra Hi import I owned had a smooth faced lock like yours. Probably made and sold in the 70's at a guess. Best bet on the spring would still be Dixie or Track.

The pistol doesn't quite match the form of any of the CVA models I am familiar with, grip shape is different then their Kentucky model and the barrel looks closer in length to the Patriot (which doesn't have a nose cap). The use of the front key and plate is also different, more like the Mountain pistol. I suspect it was built using parts that were available or perhaps salvaged from an incomplete kit (or two). There doesn't appear to be enough room to fit any of their standard nose caps. If I had it and really wanted a nose cap I would either make one from sheet brass or cast one from pewter.

One other thing, there is a hole visible in the side of the barrel near the muzzle. Hopefully it doesn't go all the way through. If it's shallow and only on one side I would suspect the barrel has been re-breeched and it was for a front sight but ended up on the side when redone. If there is a matching hole on the other side then I have no idea what they were doing.

OK, I will definitely check out those suppliers for the spring. Thank you so much for the info. I do believe both are from the 70's sometime. The hole on the pistol does not go through to both sides so that makes sense now. I have always wondered about that. Thanks again!
