If a .62cal Flintlock goes off in the woods, does it make a noise?

What roundball didn't mention was that, in eastern NC, Bow season begins 10/1, followed by a week of muzzleloading, with the regular gun season running from 10/15 to 1/1.
Actually bow season opens earlier...September 9th statewide except for the very far western zone over near Tennessee that opens 2 days later on September 11th.....and of course bows and muzzleloaders can continue to be used right on through the regular gun season.
The varied terrain in conjunction with a lot of agriculture has resulted in whitetails being numerous. The down side is that, by & large, the deer are smaller.
Definitely more deer in the eastern zone, in that heavily agricultural area, and I've heard they average a little smaller...the central zone has a strong population of normal size deer...the western zones have the fewest deer over in those mountains.
After reading the forum for a while, I'm beginning to realize that we've got it pretty good.

We've got it good all right...moderate temps, an excellent and growing deer herd...an outstanding and growing turkey population...got it great for sure

Congrats to this nice doe. Am I right it is a yearling or in GE we would say a calf or "Kitz".

Nope, she's full growed, It's the one in the front and the other one I got in the evening of the same day.

The 80grn charge of 3F I use is a powder puff load in that large volume bore...and as it is, the ball has blown clear through all 4 deer I've shot this fall...but I'll try a couple of hotter charges one day at the range just for the heck of it...particularly if it'll help smoothbore accuracy at a little longer distance...a boost even to 100grns would be a big step.

If it's a smoothbore that's a different story. I shoot 80gr's in my 20ga with a roundball. My Jager is a rifle with a heavy breech and likes heavy loads. I used 170gr's of 2ff on my moose.

If your puttin two holes in em and having good accuracy, You can't ask for more than that.

Congratulations Roundball !! You've had a great year. And here I am still trying to get my first one ever.

Chop-

If you get a chance take a ride up to Cumberland Island.

If memory serves me right it is only one of only 3 National parks that you can hunt in.

It is a barrier island right on the ocean.

At first light you can watch the does chasing birds on the beach.

If you are lucky you can watch Atomic subs come up the river while you hunt.

It is kind of wierd to be sitting on a stump with your flinter in hand and watch A boomer go by.

You will need a permit to hunt but they are easy to get.

Getting a deer a day is very do-able. I think you are allowed at least 6.

Check it out.

Well, you know the old saying...even a blind hog can find an acorn occasionally...I'm lucky.

Hang in there...it'll happen !

Sat down at 3:30 thinking they'd be moving earlier and wasn't there 15 minutes when 100yds off through the trees I saw three white flags go bounding through the bottom...no noise, no hunters around, never heard a dog, etc.
30 minutes later a small herd of families came wandering across the bottom...not a horn in the bunch...4 Does with their yearlings best I could tell...when a grown Doe got within 30-40yds I popped her in the chest with the .62cal Flintlock. Had her out of the woods and on the hitch haul while it was still light enough to see.

RC :shocked2:

It had better be making a " NOISE", rather than just a " Sound ". While the terms have been used as synonyms, they are not properly such. Sound is the more precise, clinical term for any audible vibration made by anything, NOISE, on the other hand, is a referrence to a disagreeable sound, which implies human judgment. Since a gun normally would not be expected to be firing itself, a person must be present for it to fire, and hence it makes both a sound, and noise! Of course, not everyone considers gunfire disagreeable, so the safest thing to conclude is that any gun firing anywhere makes a SOUND.

If you are a member of PITA, or the Brady Group, or the U.S. Humane Society, that sound is probably NOISE to you. To me, its a breathe of life, a renewal of faith in what made this country great at the outset, and a continuing foundation for all men to understand the difference between freedom and privilege. Now, the real question is, " If no one is present to hear it, does a falling tree make a sound?" Philosophy students have been arguing that one for years!

Hi Paul,

please give me a short introduction about PITA. Bready I think I knew. It is the foundation of Mrs. Brady that was founded after her husband was hit from the bullets of the Reagan assasin. It is against guns at all.

Kirr: I spelled it wrong. its PETA: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. It was probably a freudian slip, as I consider them a Pain in the A$$! They have taken such popular positions here as advocating the end of sport fishing, and particularly catch and release fishing, because the hooks cause the fish to feel pain! They oppose the unnecessary( in their mind) infliction of any pain on animals, and believe that all animals have the same rights that people do. ( Not the responsibilities, of course!) They demanded that the touwn of " Fishkill, New York, change its names a few years back, because it was teaching young people it was all right to kill fish! The name is anglicized Dutch, who first settle New York. Kill in Dutch I am told means creek or stream, and has nothing to do with the English word, " Kill ", which means to slay.

PETA opposes all hunting and trapping, and fishing, claims that we are disturbing the natural forces of nature by maintain artificially high deer populations so for the blood sports who pay the bills for wildlife management. They have no answer for how we fund, or maintain wild life populations without our principal tool, and fund maker, and they don't have any problems with diseases wiping a species out in an area for centuries. They want everyone to become vegetarians, even when it is clear that we cannot grow enough grain and vegetables on available land to feel everyone a solely vegetarian diet. Without ever driving around the country to actually see what farming methods are used, they claim that there is land being used to pasture livestock that could be productive of vegetables and grains.

All the pasture land in my are is along creeks, and drainage ditches, is steep- too steep to safely plow - and highly erodable land, with very thin top soils. It is used for pasture because that is all it is good for in agriculture. But, PETA does not want to be confused by actual facts. They have an emotional agenda which they push in the populous urban areas, where people are just as ignorant about farming as PETA people are. The only real danger comes from the fact that a majority of American voters live in Urban areas now. So, PETA and the anti-gun movement are walking the same ground.

Ratrher than hijack this thread about a .62cal Flint smothbore, please start new disscussions about "PITA" in another thread...thanks !

Paul:

In GE we have some similar groups. for example for eleminating of hunting, militant animal protectors and so on. Their ideas are very dangerous and far of reality. But why they are making real propaganda most of the people believe what they hear. By the way a small joke about vegetarians. Question:" Why are you vegetarian? Answer: Because I don't want to hurt the animals.Reply: But why do you steel them their feeding?"

Cptleo,

With the precious few days I get to go afield, it sure is tempting, but the expense is not. I am forced to stick close to home for now...
