Bill Hickock's 1851 Colt's. ABSOLUTELY.
FWIW: I believe he carried those in a sash wrapped around his waist, not any kind of two-holster rig.

FYI - Don that's one of those mythos of the Old West that just won't die - it's based on one studio photo of Bill in buckskins with two pistols stuck in his waist . Bill was an experienced pistolero and would know that carrying 3 lb loaded handguns in a sash was basically BS (tried it myself one time and it's crap - the sash sags, the guns move around, etc.)- it's also why in his early days as a scout he carried M1861 44 caliber Colts while in the field - his Navy's were his "town" guns.
The fact is Bill did use holsters (there are something like two or three still in existence)and then according to some sources he wrapped the sash over the holsters to keep them snug on his hips.

When I was in the army I used to claim my personal weapon for annual qualification was a Charlie G with a canister round: but that doesn't qualify so I will go with a very late model Brunswick Rifle.

Several of these historical arms mentioned can't or should not be shot.

Sure it might be nice to brag and show Wild Bill's Colts, or obtain the rifle Sgt. York first cut his teeth on, but where is the fun if you can't shoot them.

I really do like the idea of the builders apprenticeship mentioned above.

This sounds so cool to me, even if I made just one from scratch made rifle or pistol that comes out really well, but it would have to be aesthetically beautiful at it's end result.

My dream rifle would be a newly made rifle by my GGGGGF Jacob Angstadt who made long rifles near Kutztown in the late 1700s

I stand corrected. :hatsoff:
Thanks for the information. Now I'm wondering...are there any pictures of Bill Hickock wearing holsters then...???

I have been wanting a David Dodds rifle since before he passed away. I even discussed a project with him only months before his passing. Since then I have been watching and hoping for the chance to get one, pretty much any one, of his rifles. He was such a master builder.

Also in my dreams, I have a John Bivens rifle. Thinking that one will in all likelihood stay in my dreams.

Nice thread.....Mick C  :hatsoff:

yep - this the clearest version of this image but it shows Bill as a scout wearing holsters http://www.mendotamuseums.org/WBH young adult 2 cropped.jpg
It's a huge image so I'll just put the link.

and this is the one showing Bill in buckskins with his pistols barely shoved into his belt (having pistols pulled up to show off was pretty typical of the times).

If you were granted the wish of a gun.....what would be your dream gun ?.....or what would you choose ? :hmm:

( must be forum appropriate)
I have had this vision of a wheel-lock Hawken hybrid monstrosity for years. Of course, it would have to have one of Raszpla's locks. Thinking a .54 barrel. Double trigger. With a peep sight. :D

a buddy of mine a year or so ago bought an old wooden bar that was in storage in Deadwood. This old bar was from when ole Wild Bill was rooming the streets of town. It is huge, cant remember how big it is but it is one of those old ones with the huge wooden columns and mirrors.

The bar was stored in a second floor of one of the buildings in town and they had to take it out the window with a crane.

My buddy is having a man cave built with this bar in it.
