info on Caywood flintlocks

I was oogling some "gun porn" on Track's web site and saw a Danny Caywood English Game Gun. Very nice looking fowler. So I looked up his web sight and instantly fell in lust. He produces some very pretty guns. I particularly liked the English Game gun. Since Caywood produces these little beauties in both smooth and rifled bore, as well as a left hand version, I become very interested. So my question is, does anyone have any experience with Danny Caywood's flintlocks? Do you own one? Ever shot one? What is the general opinion of his guns? I'm thinking an English Game Gun with a 30".62 caliber rifled bore having everything from whitetails to wapiti in mind.

I have had a Caywood Wilson's trade gun in 20 ga. for about 5 years now. I shoot mostly patched roundball in it.. 595 ball and about 65 grains 2fg. I am very pleased with the fit and finish on it as well as the quality of the lock. They are good guns. He will make interchangeable barrels for them too, so if you want a smooth barrel to go along with the rifled you can get one that drops right in.

I have a Caywood Southern Mountain Rifle in .40 cal. It is a sweetheart, weights less that 6 lbs and is very accurate. The flintlock, fit and finish are excellent.

I have a .32 Southern Mtn Rifle, and like it more than very much. The fit and finish is superb, and it shoots very well indeed.

I would go with 36"-38" barrel if they are available and don't butcher the looks of the gun, better sight plain, and powder burning capacity.

I have a wilson and the fit and finish are outstanding. Talk to Danny about what you want to use it for and get his ideas for a more useful gun you might want to get the english fowler instead and you can still get the .62 rifled barrel. I like both guns butl I cant decide which one to get when I have the money. I say that because the wilson is a joy to use with the .20 gauge barrel.

I am lucky enough to have owned a Caywood Wilson for the past 10 years. The 36" .62 caliber smooth barrel has worked perfectly on the range and in the field. Looking down the barrel always looks like the barrel is bent, BUT the shot always goes right I aim it.

Last year, I purchased a .58 rifled barrel for the Wilson and the first 3 shots fired at 40 yds could have been covered with 2 fingertips. I absolutely LOVE my Caywood it is now the only firearm I hunt with. The barrels do interchange quickly and fit perfectly.

I thought that was your meaning. Curly maple on an English gun would be akin to putting shaft drive on a Harley :shocked2: ...just wouldn't be appropriate.

Caywood guns...I was thinking of purchacing a French trade from him, in the next month. What are your thoughts? I see that all respondants say the finish of the guns is wonderful, but function?
and what about a french trade? anyone use? how does it feel? Also I'm looking for a "rifle" not a smooth bore. (I have several) so educate me!
not new to flint, just 1st rifle that my dad didn't make. thanks
