Got my .50cal. GPR flinter last week and got her ready to go.I cleaned the bore, replaced the flint with English, and replaced the TH liner with the Ampco one. My questions are how much holy black does it take to fill up the breech area to be assured that the prb is on top of the powder and how large should I enlarge the touchhole(it's too small for any of my picks)? Both of my custom caplocks have bores that allow me to run my jag all way to the bottom so knowing that the prb is on top of the powder with no airspace is not a problem. Thanks

I drill all my liners with a #50 drill if they are not already that size.
I also cone each side. I don’t know the size of the breech chamber but I suspect 70 grs of BP will fill it.

The chamber on my Great Plains .54 flinter is 1 & 1/8" deep and 1/4" diameter. It holds 20 grains of GOEX FFFg as measured with a TC U-View powder measure.

I have the excellent RMC touch hole liner in it, which has a 1/16" hole and works very, very well.

I have never drilled a touch hole and I have never had an ignition problem.

CORRECTION:

The chamber on my Great Plains .54 flinter is 1 & 1/8" deep and 0.36" diameter. It holds 25 grains of GOEX FFFg as measured with a TC U-View powder measure.

(Sorry `bout that. I was looking at the wrong line on my record sheet.)

Thanks all. I was planing to shoot 50-65grs to punch paper with but wanted to be sure it would fill the bore high enough to seat the ball on. What's the reason for a breech like this?

A general rule of thumb for starters is one grain per caliber. 50 grains would be a good place to start. Shoot a group, then increase your charge by 5 grains. Keep it up until you find your tightest group, then adjust your sights. I love my .54 GPR flinter. You'll love your's

I am shooting 60 grains in my .54 for target shooting. I like the RCM liner as others have said, also I found the primitive sight that comes with the rifle to give a much better picture than the adjustable buckhorn that is also supplied. My accuracy was pretty decent right from the start but definitely improved after about 100 shots I was also able to load a .530 ball with a .18 patch when at the start a was using a .15 patch. I have been real happy with this rifle.

My .54 seems to like 50 grains.
