I need input on ball and patch combos for it. cant see buying 50 of 550 if you cant load them. I am a hunter not a paper puncher.

Some have reported good results with .530 or .535 with a thick patch.

Anybody using .562 bare balls with a fiber wad behind it and a card on top?

I had one when Mass only previously allowed smoothbores during their primitive MZL season. It LOVED blue-striped pillow ticking under a 0.550" roundball and wonder lube.

Once from the bench I put 4-shots into a ragged hole at 5-yards. NO one believed me ... so my Dad told me to "hold low" ... and that 5th shot dropped about an inch below the rest of the group.

It had nice wood and was a shooter, but I sold off my 'cap guns' once I got into flints!

Never tried it bareball, but I have had success with my 62-cal fowlers shooting bareball.

Also look at the thread in the forum recently on paper cartridges - it's kind of an in-between from bareball to patched roundball. The bonus is you can make them up at home and use them in the field or at the range. An they work well!

My Renegade 56 smoothie also likes the .550 ball with a .o15 mink oil lubed patch. I coned the muzzle for easier starting. Shoots 2 to 2.5 inch groups at 50 yards. At 75 yards the groups open up to 5-6 inches. I keep my shots under 60 yards.

amazing smoothbore, I shoot 2-4" groups at 50yds with 90gr 2F swiss, I think 550 (have to dbl check) warren ball in a .15 patch with mink oil,, this is formula that never gets changed.

I also used it for grouse hunting,, very fun the gun comes up very slow because of the barrel weight and you don't over swing past those fast birds,, it tracks up on them nice and knocks em right down,, with shot it seems like a low charge 28ga open bore.

if anyone has any EARLY T/C 56's (that say Blackpowder only with no mention of Pyrodex on barrel) with good bores I'm very interested.

When I had my 56 years ago it liked a bare .550 ball.Load was over powder card, fiber wad, bare ball, and over shotcard to make sure it didn't move.It liked this better than a patched ball.

Not to hijack a post but.. Anybody have anyluck with .535 round balls.. Reason i ask is molds for .535 are 21 bucks .550 would be a 100 dollar investment..

been a while but, .535's is what I shot in the one I had double-patched with whatever brand of pre-lubed patches Wally-World carried at the time. never got a shot on a deer with it but, it was deer accurate to about 60 or 70 yards or so.

.535 works well, I win matches.

.550, need a slege hammer to seat them.

Track of the wolf has .018 and .020 lubed patches.. I might buy some .550s and see what they do.. The .550 molds come up for sale but not to often.. Main use is going to be small game shot but would like the option in early season deer..

You could always use a dowel to make paper cartridges, and use them to snug-up the .535 round balls. The trick is to get a dowel that is just a tad too large, then sand it down so that two wraps of whatever paper you plan to use fits inside, snug but without needing to force it into a clean barrel. That way you're not dealing with inconsistent folding of patching materials.

There are Jeff Tanner brass molds available for around $36. I got a single ball mold for .550. It works great. You will need to swap mold handles from a Lyman or RCBS mold, as the mold does not come with handles.

After reading about the various patch & ball combinations used in the .56cal. T/C Renegade smoothbore, I get the impression that T/C bbl.s had different internal diameters over the years of production and/or were farmed out to different bbl. makers.

Btw, side by side comparisons of the .550" RB + .010" patch v. .535" RB + .018" patch (OP wads in both) showed a clear superiority of the larger RB in my gun.
