Zonie: Thanks my rifle/shotgun looks almost exactly like the photo and I was wondering whether to try to clean the finish or just leave it as is. Never ran across one with that black of a finish, figured it was lack of maintance but was not sure. The figure under that stuff I'm sure is beautyfull. Guess it's best to just get some moisture back in the wood and leave it alone. I can trace mine back to Gettsburg it probably sat in a corner after that I know the family that had it from about 1878 didn't use it. The first time I saw it was in the 1950's. Thanks.
