The Zouave uses a Musket cap. You can order them from about any of the suppliers but you will have to pay a Haz Mat fee to have them shipped. Best to try to find some locally.

"...I can't find any info on Ranson guns. Anybody got a lead? ..."

Not me, except to say that during the 1970's and '80's there were a lot of companies which were importing muzzleloading guns of all types.
Many of them had their company's name stamped on the barrel by the maker of the gun and most of them are long out of business.

zonie :)

Doubt if you will be searching down this far but
I will give it a try..I started shooting my Zoo
in '58 and didn't take too long before i got a
new nipple that used a pistol cap mine being a #
10. I have never had a miss fire of hang fire of
any kind in almost 40 years. My load is 55 gr. of
ffg. If for hunting i might increase it a bit but
would first test that at a range..Mine is a tack
driver and i use it in compitition and always take money home...Other than lapping the bore and
making new sights it is stock..I wouldnt get rid
of it for any money...I did get an over sized
mini mold and size them to the bore so there is
no wabble when the base of the mini exands..
get good with it and you will love it as we do..

Barz51,
I've been searching the net for over 12 months for info on Ranson and other owners/rifles. I have a 50cal Ranson Hawken. Yours is the first I've seen made by Ranson in that style and the first Ranson I've heard of outside Australia. Infact I've only come across 4 in total worldwide.

Mate, in my opinion, they are so rare they should be considered collectors items and values should skyrocket! Seriously, they seem to be a very well made gun and shoot quite well without too much drama in finding a good load.

Smokey.

Smokey. i have seen a lot of the hawkin ones here in west australia.
in fact i think leo laden has one in 50 cal at the moment it looked in very good nick.
bernie

Probably uses standard musket "top hat" caps. Nice gun, there, btw. I have a circa '73 Antonio Zoli. The Zouaves were among the first repro long arms imported from Italy. Do try round ball. I will say that 65 grains of FFg under a 505 grain Minie left my shoulder kind of greenish after a while. Don't need near that much for target shooting.
