Today, I got a visit from UPS who delivered my .72 Snaphuance Musket built by Leonard Day. Olga is based on a late 16th/early 17th century Dutch design. :RO:

While 60 3/4" long, the gun is very well balanced. When I pull back the cock, swing down the battery, and pull the trigger, manoman does she spark!

The stock is American walnut and the barrel is from colerain. The lock mechanism came from Albion Small Arms.

You can see her at my Snaphaunce page at http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Vault/1945/Guns/Snaph.htm

VERY Sweet! Congratulations!

I picked up an old Dixie Gun Works matchlock musket that I had hoped to be able to slip my TRS Snaphaunce lock into... sadly, the Snaphaunce locks are WAY long behind the pan, and there just wasn't enough room ahead of the wrist. Oh well! I note that yours has a nice long hunk of wood behind the breech to take that lock... NICE piece!

Cheers,

Gordon

Wow Tele, another lovely lady for fondeling!! Does it have the sliding pan cover? Nice gun!! :applause:

The lock was bought separately from Albion Small Arms in 2003 (when the dollar was actually worth more).

Leonard Day charged $875 for the rest even though he wasn't happy about parts of the lock and modified them. Considering how well he fixed up my Wheellock mechanism, I trusted his judgement.

Mind you, some of the charge was a bit extra because he normally works up to .62. Due to a snafu in communication, he was actually making Olga as a .62. :what: At the last possible moment I found out and communicated to him that this gun was supposed to be a musket, not a caliver\fusil. He was able to fix that and get the .72 barrel installed even though it lead to a two month delay.

FYI, it was the Wheellock Arquebus that he is making for me that was supposed to be the .62.

He is a really nice guy to deal with and has not disappointed me yet with his work.

Story;

I bought the snaphaunce lock off of ebay from the maker (The Rifle Shoppe) for retail, which was $295. I haven't seen him market them on ebay since then, but perhaps he has some in stock anyway. I do think that they are a decent lock, no question!

Per the matchlock musket, I got it for a steal, and promised not to tell! :: But I'll keep working on putting together a decent gun to slap that lock on to. All I need is a breeched barrel and some lumber...

Cheers,

Gordon

Today was the day I got to take Olga to the range. I used a .690rb with a .010 cotton patch. Behind that was a powder charge of GOEX Fg ranging from 80 to 90 grs.

I was very impressed with the fast lock time for this gun. When Leonard Day told me that he did some modifications to improve the original lock, he wasn't kidding! :RO:

Because of this, I ended up shooting a very large ragged hole at 20 yards using an 80gr charge. I then took the target out to 50 yards and she shot about a 5-6 inch group with a 90gr charge.

No if's, ands, or buts about it, I have to say that Leonard Day has once again deserved many kudos for a well built gun! :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:

I am soooo looking forward to when he builds my Wheellock Arquebus (Bertha). :imo:
