Well I got a call from a buddy of mine today and he said he had a couple hawken rifles and a pistol he traded for and thought I would be interested..I wound up buying all 3..There was a CVA .50 Hawken (Kinda rough) and it has one of those Hot Shot nipples on it I think..It is 2 piece aluminum and you unscrew the top half and put the cap in the bottom part and screw the top piece back on :idunno: ,A Pietta 1851 (Pretty nice) and a Cabelas Invest Arms .45 Hawken with Lyman peep sights and a globe front sight..I like it VERY MUCH..He asked me what I would give for all 3 so I gave him $400 for the bunch..I should have started lower but I liked the .45 Hawken so much that $400 just came out before I knew it..I don't know what twist it is but the rifling has lots more lands and grooves and are much deeper than my TC rifles..It also has very pretty wood

The nipple thing you describe is made for either large or small rifle primers, I'm not sure which.

It should be fairly easy to replace with a standard #11 nipple assuming the last owner didn't mess up the threads when he installed that thing.

A man can't have too many black powder guns, I always say.

Great buy!!!
The rifling in the Investarm is 1:48, and yes it is quite deeper than the Thompson's.
The rifling in the CVA, depending on vintage, would be 1:66 (earlier) or 1:48 (after about '89).
Zonie is right about the nipple, and IMHO you will be much better off with the standard #11 nipple.

Toomuch
...........
Shoot Flint

Zonie,Thanks..I tried a #11 cap in it and it didn't work..I don't have any rofle/pistol primers either..I removed it and the threads look ok so I will just get a couple nipples for it that take #11 caps once I figure out which ones to order..Thanks again

Dixie Gunworks says the CVA's usually used a 6-1 mm thread size. That's a 6mm diameter with a 1mm pitch.

It ought to look like a course pitch thread with rather large threads on it.

Fred,

The way you're going, you'll be able to open your own black powder arms dealership pretty soon! That way, you'll buy the new stuff at wholesale! :haha: :rotf: :blah:

Just kidding, but at 3 at a clip, you're well on your way! :shocked2: .

Dave

Dave,I hear ya  ..If I don't quit buying em every time I see one (Or 3)I will need a second job.. :shake:
My buddy just opened a gun shop and people are bringing guns in there everyday and he keeps his eye open for stuff I like so if there is anything you are looking for in particular let me know and I will tell him to watch for it..He definitely won't over pay for it..

Fred,
Congradulations on your new gold mine :hatsoff: Clean up that CVA and keep it for a loaner rifle. That Inevstarms Hawkens sounds real nice. The 1851 is going to be a blast to shoot. Two deer rifles and a revolver for $400...you did good

Thanks,I will clean up the CVA and give it to my grandson..It's already hanging in is room here along with his Cricket .22..He just mite get the 1851 too  ..He is 11yrs old and he has shot a .50 before and he liked it..Now I need to find a .36 rifle or 2 so I can have one and I can give my granddaughter one..She is 7 and she has a pink Cricket and is a pretty good shot with it hitting 2 litre bottles filled with water for a couple years now.....They have been trained in firearm safety ever since they could walk and point at papaws guns..(VERY PROUD of them) :hatsoff:

Congrats to that nice combo of front stuffers!

The .45 Investarm is a real nice rifle and most used here over the pond in Germany. Because of its universal twist of 1 in 48" it shoots well both with PRB and conicals. We use the .45 for roedeerhunting and target practice.

Have fun!

Regards

Kirrmeister

Fred,
Kirrmeister has a point. Why not a .45? They are easier to find. You can down load them for target or small game. They can be up loaded, in case your granddaughter would like to go deer hunting with grandpa one day. I have a .45 Pedersoli Blue Ridge flintlock. It is sweet to shoot and hardly any recoil, even with a hunting load. Just a thought :v

A 45 for her would be ok I'm sure..I just want a .36 for me since I don't have one yet..I have a kentucky .45 and now the Hawken in .45 now I just need to work up a load for the Hawken and see how it shoots..

If I remember correctly its called an "Accrashot" nipple......I have the top half of one from back in my Pyrodex days in the 80's trying to make sure that stuff ignited while hunting.

The "Accrashot" nipple had a top half you unscrewed. The top half had a firing pin. The lower half held a small rifle primer.

I'll swear I had more misfires from that thing than using regular caps............For some reason the firing pin was a sort of conical thing that may or may not set the primer off. But maybe mine was defective..................Bob

I have a cva 50 Hawkin mine likes tight patch and 72 grain of 3f GOEX with a 495 ball. With my gun it is proofed to the lowest they could get away with 700 Kp or about 10000 psi so I never shoot max powder with a conical, better safe than sorry. That gun has take more Deer than any other gun I own it is a shooter

I use the same loading in my Lyman Trade Rifle, 72 grains of 3Fg Goex!! Same twist (48), and probably same barrel length too! This load wins competitions! I use a .490 Hornady with a bore button under a .018 pillow-ticking patch.

Continued success with your rifle and thanks for sharing!

I bought a set (one flint one percusion ) of the invest arms 45 Hawkins years ago. And liked them so much I bought one for my soon to be son-in-law. That was over twelve tears ago and the rifles are still very satisifying.

Dave,I tried .490 ball and Pillow ticking with Goex FFFG,40g,50g,65g and I wasn't doing very good with any of those loads but I never tried 72g..It felt like the .490 ball and my pillow ticking didn't fit tight enough in the muzzle..I shot 12-15 rds and wiped only once after 8 or 9 shots with a spit patch..I do like the deeper rifling though ..I will measure the bore on her and see what's up..Thanks guys

Fred,

You might want to try a "bore button" (same as a wonder-wad) under the .018 patch with that .490 ball. That's what works for me during an extended range session. For a cold-bore hunting shot with the barrel un-fouled, I use a .020 pre-lubed patch, per Chuck Dixon's directions. Can't use the tighter patches when doing a 52 shot course of fire--too much hassle with cleaning after every shot IMHO!

Good luck with the new smoke pole!

Dave
