FYI, if anyone is looking to buy what looks like a top quality wooden range box, Check out the American Longrifle Forum classified ads. I tried to post a link but couldn't get it to work. Look for the post titled "Shooting Boxes FS".

Yep, I have 4 of his boxes and just bought Box "C" for a 5th, :slap: only because it was too pretty a box to pass up.

Great looking gear, Roundball. I too carry a plastic tool box to the range. Works for me. It's light and holds everything I need....Mick C
Right...all these similar looking so-called "wooden range boxes" are no more pc than my plastic MTM Case Guard boxes are.

Were big "range boxes" ever items which have historical roots? If they are just a modern development then it would be hard to copy an original.

Depends on what "historical roots" you are looking at. Back in the day, in Europe and even the U.S., wealthier shooters had helpers who carried their cased sets of guns and equipment to shooting events. Don't sweat it. Do yer own thang.

back when the matches were many. I used a .50 cal. side opening ammo can. never got any remarks on it. other then where can I find one.

Lotta bad advise here. You all need to keep up with the Jones'. Think about the average blackpowder shooter. Now realize half the shooters are below that level. You probably fit in there. Why make it obvious? Step up your game. The wooden box isn't for you, it is for esprit de corp. Take some pride. You aren't above average but try to look like you've been there -- done that. No reason to advertise for the sake of the expense of a nice wooden range box.

:hmm:

I woulda thought that a fellas TARGET RESULTS would show where they are better than some expensive fancy box.....

Yep, it don't much matter one way or the other what you load from (bag or box), it's the final score tally that counts. Granted, I've never seen anyone load from a box at a Rendezvous or Woods Walk,,, but I bet those boxes are there in the tent, truck, trunk, or trailer somewhere. :hatsoff:

"Better"... is a hard thing to define and even harder to measure....

I only have one question:

What the heck is "cricket"?

:idunno:

Exactly...but people will be sheep. And some of those same people with those sheep like attitudes are phonies / hypocrites...not uncommon to see posts about them having modern coolers / ice chests at their camps hidden inside something made to look like it came across a prairie in a covered wagon or something, LOL

Dewey...
I think every box I have seen was hand made by the owner....Mine certainly was...Many hours went into it's construction. Even if someone did buy their wooden box, how is that different than buying anything else.... One can take pride in something that is hand made by themselves....it's a bit tougher when done by a Chinese laborer.

RoundBall...
I don't think that your "all or nothing" attitude will abash the majority.
People operate at different levels on the historical side of this sport...
Perhaps you would be best to try the traditional side of this great sport before you criticize it.

You might like it.

I hate to say it but......Alden has a point. :shocked2:

:idunno: I kinda thought Alden was funnin...he couldn't possibly dist my walmart bag? I can shoot pretty dang well out of it "most days" and I bet a wooden box would not help. Unless it got me outta the Corolla to shoot off the box on the hood? Most my fliers are the door shifting as I sit on the floor and aim out the window?

Yea I know, I might be a redneck :hmm:

The WalMart bag is a classic :haha: But Why do you equate the box with accuracy?

Imagine if you approached the sport with the same attention you do trying to get that bullet in the bullseye...
You'd be a super Mountain Man.

I approach the box with possible better accuracy as a lawn chair and a box (withna sweater on it) on the hood would not move with the wind like the open door of the corrola.

I have no idea what you mean by the other? I approach the sport as often as I can which often means throwing my "stuff" in a walmart bag and runnin to the car before the wife sees I've finshed one chore and starts at me on the next.
When I was young n single I had hours to spar and got pretty good at my load figuirin. Im happy where I am now but do need a few long range sessions with some "dutch" time to get even better. Also need to work on a crown or two and will soon ask how in anothe thread.

:rotf: Stop!! your making my side hurt....

Maybe you should get your wife a gun so she will want to go shootin....Or are you afraid you might be the target. :hmm: :haha:

You should take pride if you made it yourself. Some of us are better at some things then others. My dad could do any sort of metal work very well, but his carpentry skills were marginal. My brother is the oppisite, me I'm all thumbs. Take joy in what you can do and do it well. Dont get caught up in things that dont matter to you.The builder and user is the only one to be proud of a box. You can only be ashamed of a box if it falls short of what you want.

I have been proud enough of my walmart bags that I have used the same one three times in one year (then it split open in the driveway whilst I was sneaking my supplies in and the wife caught me n I jumped :shocked2:
