I’m guessing a 1/4-28 re-thread into an 8mm (or 5/16”) threaded hole (based on the OP starting an 8mm threaded nipple in to it) is going to be more than just a bit on the loose side….. as the hole is already larger than a 1/4” diameter.

You are all correct a 1/4X28 will be to small. However standard nipples are available in larger diameters.

Actually suggested that yesterday in an earlier post with potentially correct size and a TOW part number. The OP had already ordered and revived a nipple that didn’t fit, and the suggestion of a 1/4-28 threaded nipple, if followed, would just get them another nipple that wouldn’t fit, so I spoke up.

Yes, they seem to be the same length which was why I was confused.

I'll also say that the new nipple I purchased was from Taylor's and company and they said it was designed for Italian enfields.

Some good advice here @Florida airgunner; but to me, no sir, not the same threads. Different pitch, variance in height. That's not the replacement nipple you need. Don't try to screw that new one down; you may well ruin your existing bolster. Be patient, find the right replacement. When I first ordered replacements online for my Parker Hale, would you believe I ordered three variations to find the right pitch and length. At $8 a nipple, I figured it was worth it - when I found the right one, I ordered some spares and tucked them away. Don't know what they cost now.

Viceroy Books in Australia is my go-to guy. Yep - a bookstore with muzzle loading stuff go figure.

In the US, Lodgewood would be the chaps you are after. See the attached page, this is the nipple that my mate uses in his Armi Sport Enfield. If you look closely, you will see that the thread is different to your replacement.

I'm just slightly confused how both of the nipples screw in just fine without any resistance if you guys say they're not the same thread size. Here's another picture of the threads in the bolster too because I think the first picture wasn't too good. These threads are a little grimey but I'm suprised some of yall say they're straight up unsafe. Am I just missing something here?

Not sure what you guys are looking at but the bolster threads need recut. They were definitely cross threaded and now torn.
Find the next size up and drill&tap to proper size.

They are different threads though. I would not use the new one. Take them to a decent hardware store and check the thread pitch with their thread gauges.

@Florida airgunner, what you really need is a toolmaker or metrology expert that will have the ability and tools to accurately measure what you actually have left in the bolster’s nipple hole and make a recommendation for the next steps. Folks here can speculate all day from your descriptions and photographs, but a hands on examination by someone that knows what they are doing, at least in my opinion, is the way to go. A good gunsmith may be able to help, but what you need someone that completely understands thread systems, typically a toolmaker or metrology expert. Do you have any local toolmaker or machine shop friends that you could lean on?

I do not that I know of. I think what I'll do is take the gun to a gunsmith and ask them to retap the bolster for an oversized nipple, regardless of whether it was needed or not, just to play it safe.
