I haver a CVA Hawkin in 50 cal, if I were to get a second barrel for it could I have it boared out to 20 ga so it would be a smooth boar shot gun by simply chaging the barrel.

this being that a 20 ga is .615 in and a 50 cal is just .115 in smaller i would think that by removing thr rifeling this would be achived.

likewise if you know where I can get a barrel that would fit the CVA and is allready 20 ga please share.

Thanks Dan :stir:

Folks do have TC and Lyman/Investarms barrels bored to 20ga, but I don't think it can be done with the CVA styled Drum/Bolster breech type.

It's the nature of the breech plug that allows for everything staying together under pressure.

The CVA Shotguns I've seen have a different plug than many of their rifles use. I don't think there is a drop in shotgun/smooth bore for the CVA Hawken type rifles.
The CVA shotgun is a whole nuther creature.

I made a typo mine is a TC thats what I get for talking on the phone with a buddy who wants to by a CVA

Thanks Dan

Rifling puts a spin on a ball/bullet that increases its accuracy. The grooves in a rifled bore also hold fouling so swabbing between every shot isn't necessary. A shotgun without a choke throws a really bad pattern in most instances.
It will cost some $$$ to ream out the bore into a smooth one. What are you trying to accomplish? Maybe see if a .50 can be reamed out to a .52 if you just want to "freshen" the bore. It would likely cost about the same as doing a smooth bore.

I have a 54 cal smoothbore barrel on my Traditions Hawken stock, which makes it a 28 gauge. Shoots pretty good shot patterns for squirrels out to about 20 to 25 yards, but that's about the limit. It is WAY heavier than an actual 28 gauge shotgun is, so it isn't too great at birds or running critters.

It's my main BP squirrel gun. Had to play with a lot of factors, charge, shot weight, shot size, wads, lube, paper shot cups, etc, to finally get a decent pattern. It wasn't quick or easy, but it shoots pretty good now.

||I want to make a long range shotgun for deer by using 2 or 3 balls in the barrel for the shotgun area where I hunt
