Thats what the stop on the drill press is for, to prevent the bit from going too far.
With all respect to you, I would bet your favorite drink Eric knows that. He did just one of the OH CRAP things humans do. We all do it! Everyone on this forum that works with their tools, goes astray once in a while. Thanks Eric for fessing up to being human.
We all gotta love this forum!

The older I get the more time I spend on the crapper.

I have noticed from plenty of posting on various boards there is always someone out there that feels the need to scold you about this and that when they see an opening, they can't help it apparently.

My drill press stop is broken, It was the small pilot hole bit coming out of the chuck 3 times while I was drilling that changed my drilling perspective, I had too much bit sticking out on the last go round.

The fix is complete, the plug is in place held by a healthy dose of red Locktite thread locker,

I bought a GM .54 15/16 drop in barrel for my TC Hawken kit gun, I noticed it has a similar plug opposite the nipple on the hooked breech

I am one that never messes up with a drill press or other piece of equipment, unless that mess up will be clearly visible to all that look at the finished product. Always considered the ability to creatively work one’s way out of a situation when things don’t go right to be the sign of a true craftsman. Can not imagine how boring life must be for those who never have the opportunity to develop that skill. I just try not to repeat the same mess up too many times.

Heck, I saw a $300k waterjet cutting machine at a trade show with a sign on it, pointing out that they had cut one of the main weldment beams over a foot too short, and that a purchased machine would not have the extra length of steel beam bolted on.

It happens.
