I was wondering if anyone else had a GPR that was most accurate with heavy powder charges.
Mine, in .54 shoots it's absolute best with 100 to 110 grains of Goex 2f, .018 pillow tick patch, and .530 cast ball.
Any other charge below 100 grains and my groups open up considerably.
120 grains and she shoots right about three inches but still clover leafs.
There's no such thing as a good plinking load for this rifle if I want accuracy.

It's funny thet you should mention this, 'cause over the years I've owned more than several Lyman GPR's and every one of them prefered at least 90 gr. powder charges for top accuracy!!

Well gosh guys my 50 cal GPR does great at 50gr powder.. Might have to do some playing and see if it does better at a higher amount... I know it has left bruises with just 50gr of powder.

I must also add, thet I shot "roundballs only" in the GPR's I've owned!!

What are you shoot'n in yore's with the 50gr. charge, thet leaves you with bruises???? ::

I'm curious also.
I only feed my GPR a steady diet of Goex and PRB.
Even with 100 grain charges she kisses ever so gently. I've never had a bruise from her.

In my .54 GPR I found that a tight patch and ball combination made the difference. With a .535 ball it matters not at all the powder charge, they all shoot great. With the .530 ball I could expect groups to open up. fffg also helped tighten the group, not sure why.

I only shoot roundballs and most of the time dont feel a thing in fact, the time or two I got bruises I dont remember it kicking or anything different, so maybe I was just bruising easy then. I only shoot blackpowder muzzleloaders, as I dont care for the recoil of the modern rifle...DH did some fast talking to get me to even try it :redface:but once I did.. I had my own rifle by the next rondy :: Its an awesome gun...bit heavy.. which is why I am in the process of building a Issac Haines with a swamp barrel...it will be interesting to compare the way the two guns shoot..

My GPR also likes heavy powder charges. Mine is a .50 and with any charge lower than 85gr. my groups turn into patterns. :haha:

With about 88gr (between the 85gr and 90gr mark on my measure) it is very accurate. Surprisingly accurate, actually. I must have lucked-out and received a very good barrel b/c it is very accurate. It has to be the barrel b/c it isn't me! :haha:

A friend of mine can shoot just as accurately with the thing so it must be the barrel...or something. It has been that accurate since day 1 also. Got lucky, I guess.

I get great accuracy with my .54 with 80 grains. 90 grains does well also, I havn't tried anything more than that. :peace:

Mr. Out a Huntin'
My hunting partner worked all the way up to 110gr (3F(?), will have to ask) with PRB (caplock) before he was satisified with the accuracy; one and 1/4" group at 100yds. He burned almost two lbs of powder before he got there. Black & blue shoulder. When I asked why he didn't use a folded towel as a recoil pad for his shoulder, he said he forgot .

My GPR .54 likes 100 grains of 2f or 3f Goex with wonder-lubed pillow ticking. Lyman gives max charges as 100 gr 3f and 120 gr 2f. When originally developing hunting load with 2f, it liked 90-100-110 and seemed to open up a bit at 120. It also is a fine target rifle with 60 grains 3f.

Mr. Out a Huntin',
Got ahold of the ol' Coot and he confirmed it was 110gr of 3F and it shot under one and 1/4" at 100yds with the .54cal PRB barrel. Didn't shoot under 3" until that magical 110gr moment. It has performed quite well on Caribou. He does NOT endorse this load for anyone else.
He only went as far as 100gr of 2F before giving up on it.

Try 110 grains with a .535 pillow tick patched ball. That's what i use in Lucifer, my GPR, I built over 20 years ago.

Just :m2c:

I gotta' be up front and honest: I don't even own a GPR! I figure if I can't find my way with my old brass compass then I'm better of just staying lost.

Wait a minute - Was that GPR or GPS? Either way, I've never found enough powder to do either of 'em justice...
