In a more serious vein, I wonder if our smoothbore musket shooter predecessors of the 1700s ever tried small dabs of clay to hold ball on powder.

This is really interesting. I also watched their videos about the other muzzleloading cannons from the same period. They all seem really similar to medieval European cannons.

Maybe they took one off a European ship and copied it , or one found its way into their region by trade. Maybe a bright person came up with the idea themselves .
