I have several questions.
In a past post someone said that you could use un-salted Crisco as a lube. Will the cheaper Wally-World brand work as well?
What about olive oil?
I have also read that some use Windex to wipe down the bore. Is this good or is there a better product out there?
Also, someone spoke of using alcohol for wiping down the bore. Is this in place of Windex?
It is good to know that there are so many ML shooters that have their own receipes and are willing to share info.

Basically almost anything will work. I have used Blue Windshield washer fluid as a bore cleaner it worked well enough. I use spit patching most of the time so I can't help you with the Crisco question, but I have used Crisco in a cap wheelgun.

I still rely on hot water and Spic and Span to clean my guns after a rendezvous, or a day to the range or a weekend shoot. Even if I have used windshield washer fluid or Ballistol or some other mix. I always oil my barrels when I'm done with 1/2 2 stroke motor oil and 1/2 kerosene. It works for me.

If you use the Windex, get the kind with vinegar. Water and detergent works for me, but I use the Windex/vinegar for BPCR bore wiping.

1. Almost any thick-ish greez/oil/lard works for lube. Lots of recipies floating around but to your question yes, yes, and yes.

2.Here again ther are LOTS of options. I prefer "Formula 409" Cheap and works GREAT!

3. I like alcohol AND I use it on my guns too  . Seriously for intermitant swips and and for use just prior to shooting and EXPECIALLY just before I load for the hunt I use alcohol because it captures and evaporates all moisture. Good stuff to have around. You CAN clean entirely with it but thats a little more expense then necessary.

4. Comming up on my one year anaversary here and you are right: YES IT IS! I have learnt sooo much from these guys!!

Dollar store gets you the most cleaning bang for your buck. Generic Windex WITH ammonia to neutralize corrosion. Heard that old timers even peed down the barrel and on them when they got hot from Buffalo shooting. YMMV! Plenty of lube recipes here and on the web. Tallow and beeswax. Olive oil and beeswax. Spit is free...lick your patch, stuff and shoot!

I think you'll get all your answers here and more. Enjoy!

I use alcohol at the range to clean maybe every 5 shots or so. The nice thing with alcohol is it dries by the time you pour your powder. No need to run a dry patch down the tube.

I shoot patched round balls with bore butter, and I clean between about every 5 shots with Alcohol, again it evaporates fast is the reason, no second patch. I may turn the patch over and run it down a second time. I even clean around the nipple with the dirty patch to try and keep the build up down while I am shooting. It makes it faster to clean at home if I keep things cleaner at the range.

Dusty, you've asked about both cleaning products and lube products, so you may have unwittingly started the longest post in history. Inasmuch as your last comment is correct, the overwhelming majority of answers you get will be useful, and the real hard part is picking the one which works for you.

For cleaning, I like plain old soapy warm water, and i like moose snot for lube (but Track of the Wolf makes a mink oil stuff that shows promise). It works for me, but that's just one guy's opinion. Beware of hype, and go with what works for you. Don't ever put it away without cleaning and it'l last for three generations or more.

make good smoke!

I can't help you with the lube question. Like Many Klatch I use spit at the range. I also don't have to clean between shots most of the time. When I do I run a damp patch down to break up a crud ring it's with my cleaning solution - TOW's Bore Cleaner cut 50/50 with water followed by a dry patch.

Those people I know that clean between shots like alcohol because it evaporates fast enough that they don't have to run a dry patch down the bore.

I clean at home with the cut TOW cleaner and protect the barrel with Ballistol. This seems to allow me to shoot all day without cleaning. The TOW cleaner is nothing but a super soap with a few extra ingredients. Dish soap in water works very well also.

" Heard that old timers even peed down the barrel and on them when they got hot from Buffalo shooting"

But it is not OK to blow down the barrel? :hmm:

my favorite lube latley, has been olive oil. crisco gets too stiff in cold weather. and I don't swab between shots, maybe every 10 of 20 shots I use spit patch. then hot water & dish soap followed by lots of wd-40 when I get home.

make sure you wipe the pee off the barrel before you blow down it :rotf: and the touch-hole is facing away from your leg :rotf: :rotf:

Sometimes it is really hard to keep all these rules in ones mind, this is obviously a rather complicated sport :shocked2:

 What Lonehunter said works for me!!! Do you use Buf pee after or make your own?
Dusty
