I seen a flintlock for sale in a pawn shop it has j.p. beck signed on top of barrel but it doesn't look old enough to be a original. Was wondering if someone makes reproductions of them

Beck has been copied by lots of folks over the years. How much were they asking?

Surprise, surprise. That should be an embarassment and good negotiation point. "Everyone" knows how BP will rust a bore when left in too long. Probably wasn't cleaned after the last use because they didn't clear that load; another negotiation point.

Unsafe! "It may not even be safe to shoot now".
Probably one reason it hasn't sold in 2 years.

You'll have to factor in the cost of having a good, BP-familiar gunsmith check it out, now. That expense should come off the price, right?

If it looks good and functions well otherwise, and what you can see of the bore looks OK, I'd get the price as low as they'll go, then offer to leave "to think about it".
Then buy it.

What I could see of the bore it looked like it hadn't been cleaned. They said they had $1800 into it and think it worth twice that said they wouldn't go below $1800

I would pass. Two years? $1800? Why have they not posted it on some sites? It simply does not add up that they would refuse negotiation with the stated history. Polecat
I'm afraid of it for that kinda money and not even knowing for sure what it is

How do they have, "$1,800 into it," if it is still loaded and the bore looks, "uncleaned"?
They clearly didn't put work into it. If they paid "$1,800" for it,,,, 2 years ago, they should just sell it for whatever they can to be rid of it, and write off the loss.

I reckon that the last zero is an ink smudge.

It's probably worth a hundred and eighty dollars of anybody's money.

Exactly. Either they're liars or fools. I suspect that they're liars and that they MIGHT have a few hundred bucks in it. Until we all see some photos, who knows whether it's a nice rifle that's worth $800, $1000 or more, but the fact that it has a load in it and hasn't been previously cleaned is an absolute danger sign to me. My guess is that most likely a fake/repro Beck, but again, photos would help to determine that. I suspect I'd probably just shake my head and walk away from this one though.

That's what they loaned the guy on it and he never came back for it

I'll try to take some pictures I'm curious as to what it is top of barrel is signed j.p. beck but also has factory looking stamp on side of barrel saying 54 cal. Stock looks like a southern poor boy kit to me

I probably wouldn't have come back for it either if I thought I got $1,800 for it. Maybe you should let us know where the place is and we can all take some old muzzleloaders in to pawn. ;). After all, how hard it is it to engrave JP Beck into a barrel? And, as far as I know, Beck wasn't making a whole lot of Southern poor boys. ;)

Maybe some one more knowledgeable would know, but I doubt Beck made many if any 54 caliber rifles.
