This silly Cat! Thanks Sharps4590 for mentioning of removing the barrel for proof marks. That's what I get for being in a hurry.... again. Darn, I should have thought of that since I could not find any other markings.

Good point Sharps. I'll check that out.

Thanks, Cat9

Further to maudite's reply: the platinum plug in the breech is a common feature of quality British arms of all kinds. It serves two purposes: first as a safety plug to blow out at excessive bore pressures and second as a slow bleeder relief vent to allow trapped air to escape when the load is rammed home (there should be a tiny hole in the center of the plug leading into the powder chamber). The platinum inlay at the breechplug/barrel joint was for decoration only, it's not a washer or spacer, and on many guns did not go all the way around the barrel, only the surface that was visible (above the stock).

POS, wanna sell it?

Brgds,

Thanks Bluejacket. There appears to be a very small hole in the platinum plug. So that fits your description. And thanks for the info on the vent of the plug. I've checked out the bore and it looks fine to me. I don't see any rust or pitting. I'm not sure of the rate of twist. I don't know how to determine that.

Anyhow, I don't own the rifle.....yet. But think I'm gonna make an offer on it. That gun just looks too good to be true. Nice tight fitting workmanship.

Thanks, Cat9
