Jacob & Jeremiah Wilt Jr, were gunsmiths in Montgomery, Ohio.

J.Wilt & Co made rifles marked Dayton, O (Ohio), and were located at Upper Hydraulic (St) in Dayton, from 1848-1854.

JMO, Your rifle looks like it might have been converted from flintlock, due to the drum.

It should make a good Winter project fer ya !

.

Only listing I can find is for-

J.Wilt 1850-54 General gunsmith Dayton,Ohio

Might try the Ohio Longrifles website.

thanks for the picture. I live in So. Cal at the moment (two seasons--wet and dry ) no winters here. Project will be a retirement project. Do we know if J. Wilt was builder or just barrel maker? I have him as barrel maker that sold unrifled barrels. Such a mystery these old guns bring. We need to teach them to talk...........MCP

Wilt was listed, presumeably by himself, as a gunsmith, and not a specialist - so I would think a pre-Civil War gunsmith, proud enough to put his name on his work, did it all.

But, whadda I know ?
