I was wondering if any of you could share your experience using Jacks battle powder. Can it be used for regular shooting? My understanding is its just like regular Goex without the graphite coating.

Thanks for any help!

You are correct it is Goex without graphite coating. It is a granulation a little coarser than 3F but finer than 2F. I have been using it for about 4 years for all my shooting. I compete with pistols (sharpshooter class) at Friendship and usually bring home a handful of medals and sometimes a plaque so I am satisfied with the accuracy I get with it. Since it isn't coated with graphite it shoots cleaner than regular Goex but is more hygroscopic.

Thanks! Does it draw moisture from the air unburned or after? Do you think it might be an issue while hunting in the snow. I know as bp shooters we need to take appropriate measures when shooting in wet weather, but do you think it would be a issue?

Thanks for your response!!!

I've used it before and still have about half a pound left. It only comes in 3f granulation and as you stated, it's not graphite coated. It costs a bit less than Goex but that's the only advantage I found. What little shooting I did with it I found that for my purposes and in my rifles, both 50 caliber, was that 3f Goex was more consistent and gave me better accuracy. I freely admit and state that this was far from scientific or extensive testing involved here, just my opinion. I didn't see any difference as far as left over fouling between Jack's or Goex.

Now, due to their customer service, I will never again order Jack's Battle Powder and that is all I will say. I hope your experience, should you choose to purchase any, either was or is more pleasant than mine.

I hunt in the snow also and have had no problems with the powder. My hunting is day trips, so I don't know how it does left in the barrel for days at a time.

It's an on-line vendor http://www.jackspowderkeg.com/. I purchase for my CW unit, and we've always had good service from them.

When we first started ordering, I questioned just what the "battle powder" was, since some of our members also live fire. The response that I got is below (apologies for the all caps, that's literally how it came back). I'll admit that we, as a unit, decided to stick with standard Goex - again, because of the live fire aspect.

I WILL ATTEMPT TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION ABOUT ”“JACKS BATTLE POWDER””BY: ANGELO J. PIAZZA, III for JACKS POWDER KEG
IT IS GOEX 5FA BLACK POWDER MADE IN DOYLINE, LOUISIANA, AND IS PRIVATELY LABELED AS
“JACKS BATTLE POWDER”
IT IS A 3FFF EQUIVILANT AND IS USED BY REENACTORS IN BOTH MUSKETS AND CANNONS. IT IS NOT GLAZED WITH GRAFITE AS BLACK POWDER IS TRADITIONALLY COATED WITH THIS BLACK LUBRICANT. THIS UNGLAZED POWDER APPEARS TO MAKE OUR REENACTOR BLANK SHOTS A LITTLE CLEANER. I SELL A LOT OF IT TO INFANTRYMEN AND SMALL BORE CANNONEERS. LARGE BORE CANNONS ARE SOLD GOEX 4FA OR 3FA, DEPENDING UPON THE BORE AND DESIRED EFFECT. PURCHASES IN 25LB BULK LOTS ARE A BIG SAVINGS TO THE ENTHUSIAST/REENACTOR. I OWN 3 DIFFERENT CANNONS AND MANY RIFLES, PISTOLS AND LEVER ACTION 44-40 CALIBRES. JACKS BATTLE POWDER WORKS FOR REENACTORS FOR OBVIOUS REASONS, AND I LIKE IT. THAT’S WHY I SELL IT. NO CHINESE OR FOREIGN POWDERS FOR ME, SINCE I CAN GET A BETTER POWDER FOR LESS MONEY, MADE BY AMERICANS FOR AMERICAN HISTORICAL INTERPRETATION. WHY JEOPARDIZE OUR DOMESTIC PRODUCTION OF BLACK POWDER BY BUYING FOREIGN MADE POWDER???? WE SHOULD SUPPORT THIS AMERICAN MADE PRODUCT, SINCE GOEX IS THE ONLY AND LAST RENMAING MAKER OF BLACK POWDER IN THE UNITED STATES!!!!!
WHEN I FIRST VISITED THE GOEX PLANT I DISCOVERED THE EXISTENCE OF THIS POWDER AND LEARNED THAT IT IS TRADITIONALLY USED FOR FIREWORKS. IT IS A POTASSIUM BASED POWDER OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY AND IS HISTORICALLY CLOSER IN GRAIN CONFIGURATION TO WHAT WAS AROUND IN THE CIVIL WAR. IT WORKS FOR ME!!!
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JACKS BATTLE POWDER AND OUR GOEX FG (FINE GRAIN) POWDER???
ANSWER: THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE IN THE SUBSTANCE BUT IT IS DIFFERENT IN GRANULAR STRUCTURE. THEREFORE, IN ORDER TO HIT A TARGET WITH A BULLET CONSISTENTLY, THE FG {FINE GRAIN} LINE OF GOEX POWDER IS YOUR PREFERENCE. IT IS GRADED AND MORE CONSISTENT DUE TO THE GRAIN STRUCTURE BEING MORE UNIFORM. MY “JACKS BATTLE POWDER” IS MORE A COMBINATION OF FLAKES AND GRAINS OF A GENERAL SIZE BUT IT IS NOT AS UNIFORM AS THE FINE GRAIN LINES OF POWDERS. GOEX EXPRESS IS OUR TOP OF THE LINE POWDER MADE FOR THE EXPERT MARKSMAN. GOEX FINE GRAIN IS TRADITIONALLY USED BY HUNTERS AND FOR TARGET SHOOTING. THESE LINES ARE MORE EXPENSIVE BECAUSE THEY ARE MORE LABOR INTENSIVE. JACKS BATTLE POWDER IS ECONOMICALLY FEESABLE FOR THE HISTORICAL REENACTOR WHO SHOOTS BLANKS. IT IS A HIT WITH ALL WHO HAVE TRIED IT.
JACKS BATTLE POWDER IS MOST APPROPRIATE FOR BLANK FIRING FOR HISTORICAL REENACTMENTS.

I ordered a case of JBP sometime back and was pleased with the service. I've been using it in lieu of Goex, of which I still have a good supply. I've found no difference accuracy wise and it cleans up at least as well as Goex. I chronographed several rifles and compared the velocities with Goex. In most cases JBP gave somewhat higher velocities; sometimes quite a bit higher. The fouling is hygroscopic just like other black powder but unburned powder seems not to. Yes, it can sometimes clump but a light shake of the can takes care of that. As long as the price is good I'll continue to buy it.

While on business in Louisiana I made a point of going by and meeting Judge Piazza. I enjoyed the visit and the Jacks Battle.
I use it in small bore rifle, revolver and most especially in flinters.
It has worked out very well in the .41 caliber 1858 Remington with more punch than I anticipated.

Oh, sorry.
Had it made from a .36. Chambers reamed. New barrel, though the old one could have been rebored (well, in theory at least).
I will send you a link to the artiste.
