Here is a picture of a little 7-point buck I killed on opening day of BP season here in VA. I was overlooking a little creek in a hardwood bottom and just enjoying the day. The sky was bright blue, and the leaves were just at their peak. The colors were awesome. The leaves were coming down all around me, kinda like a little snow flurry. You know what I mean. Off to my left I had a coupla scent bombs placed and sure enough, around 10:30 this fella comes running in and slides to a stop as soon as he passes my scent bombs. He’s looking left and right, thinking “where’d she go??” I carefully lined up the sights and fired off a round. The roundball knocked him off his feet but he got up again. While I was reloading he staggered about six feet and then was down for the count.
The ball hit exactly where I aimed, and took out both lungs. I recovered it under the hide on the opposite side. It did an incredible amount of damage inside. The shot was 60 yards according to my rangefinder. The rifle is my GPR built from a kit, named “old Jacob” after Jacob Silvis, a relative that made longrifles in the early 1800’s.

Congrats and Waidmanns Heil from Bavaria, GE. The pic of the bullet is very interesting. Didn't expect that they mushroomed so good.Where was the buck being hit? Think no outcome of the PRB ?

I shot a deer in 98 with a .50 rb that was recovered. It was about 18-19mm diameter. Flattened right out, and still weighed around 180gr. It weighed 188gr originally.

That was the only ball I have recovered. Have shot many deer with a .58rb, and they zip right on through!

Nice deer Shooey, and great shot.

Congrats, Shooey. Great looking buck and gun. Thanks for the account...sounds like you get to hunt while weather is still nice. :hatsoff:

Good shooting! Enjoy.....I shot a buck last year with a 50cal.rd.ball. The recovered ball is here on my desk and measures .720-.730, .343 thick at it thickest point and the 180 gr. ball now weighs 172gr. It was broadside shot, through the lungs and the ball was resting under the very bruised opposite side.

Thank you all for the kind words!

Kirrmeister, to answer your question, the ball entered on his right side, just a little above the heart. It passed through a rib on the way in. I recovered the ball under the hide, on the left side just in front of his rear leg. It really did a lot of damage inside.
