I would like to get some comments about this Jaeger. I built it around 1979. The stock is birds eye maple. The lock is Davis. I can't remember the barrel maker. It is 58 cal with U groove rifling. Trigger is Davis. A friend gave me the stock blank. This was the third rifle that I have built. Started with a Dixie half stock Kentucky in 1964, which I still have. The second was a percussion half stock. I got involved in a F&I War group and decided on the Jaeger. The picture that I worked from is S-46 in Weapons of the American Revolution by W. Moore. In reality, I never really completed it. I needed it for a re-enactment. Used potassium permanganate with iron filings added, and then heated and Lindspeed to finish I know that it is too heavy in some areas and have been thinking about re-doing it. The pictures of the left side were left at work. I'll post them tomorrow along with the closeups.
I would like to know what the group thinks about it, as it now is, and what you think about re-doing it.

I like it. It's hard to see the details but it has a good look. I have a rifle I built in 1978 that I have thought about working over but it's a piece of my history now and I can look at it and current pieces and see progress.

It honestly doesn't look bad to me either, and I like the color. If you absolutly HAD to do it over I'd consider restocking in euro walnut. I'd probably leave it alone tho as it's a pleasing rifle to look at. :hatsoff:

 I like it. I am not an authority on what a jaeger should look like by any means, but for what it's worth I think it's an appealing piece of art. It also just happens to be in my favorite rifle caliber as well, a fact which does influence my opinion slightly, but I wouldn't write it off it were a .54 or a .62 either..

    WOW That is a nice piece of KIT!!!
You should be proud of that lovely one. Gee my Jaeger hasn't come from the rifle shoppe yet... OK so now I am jealous and sad... "O" wells 3 months late... who's cry any ways... me that's who. But seriously would you mind if I do the same finish... lovely for sure..
Best regards Loyalistdawg... :hatsoff:

Not knowing a thing about this kind of rifle or flintlocks it looks great to me, (I do have 21 MLs now) Ive just got back into NMLRA , I was one of a crowed that jumped ship when they let inl... in. Ive really missed Muz Blast , but what comes out now is ju.. vs the old ones 90s thru 2003 ,Point being for about a year they ran one of these each month, 20" barrels 60 to 90 cal, some works of art some bulky looking things)(I fell in love with the (looks like a chopped up 4"x6" 20"something barrel 70/80 cal) I guess its IF you like it then it must be just right! Myself I like the short 2" wide barrel ones ,but wouldnt turn yours down or change a thing. thats just a outsiders view. Great work, really. Fred :hatsoff:

Fred,
Shumway republished those articles as a "book". Just got a copy and its very informative - tho' I really wish he'd redo the photos because the quality on some of them is really bad.

Like the rifle, especially the finish. I do have a bee in my bonnet about bananna locks that aren't round faced tho', but thats just me being picky (I've been hanging out here too much!) :)

Thanks to every one that replied. Since the consensus is to leave it along, that's what I'll do and just shoot it. I actually have too many projects started to start another. The lock on the picture that was used for reference appears to be flat, but it does not have as much banana shape as the Davis. At the time, I don't remember if there was the variety of locks, as there now is.

Thanks again for the comments,

Thanks for more closeups. Still a fine gun. I especially like the nosecap and ramrod end.

I'd only "show a little more barrel" and make sure that the forestock rounds up evenly to the barrel, to almost a knife edge. The sides should look like a pair of parentheses practically ( ) with no "top shelf" (not [ ]-like, even if rounded on the sides). Those things are hard to see and in any picture as a lot depends on angle and light.
