a square load, is 60 GRS. of powder & 60 GRS. of shot, correct?

I thoughr a square load was where the length of the powder charge was the same dimension as the width of the bore. Same for the shot.
In other words, if the bore diameter is 3/4 of an inch, your powder charge and shot column should each 3/4 of an inch long when loaded in the bore ( not counting wadding ).
After the advent of smokeless powder, which maintains good velocity with less volume, the term only applied to the shot charge.
I’m pretty sure this is right, even though most people believe it just means equal volumes of shot and powder.
Maybe Britsmoothy or Tac can enlighten us on this, as I think the term originated in the British gun trade and hunting circles.

As far as I'm concerned it is. I don't plan on bringing a measuring tape along in my hunting pouch.

Then again, if you use the same volume measuring "device" to pour out both powder and shot, wont they both be the same length??? Zonie where are you when the tough math questions show up ??

No.
A "square load" is a load where the powder measure used to measure out the powder charge is also used to measure out the amount of shot that's going to be put down the barrel.

If a 60 grain powder measure is being used, it will pour 60 grains of powder down the barrel followed by 7/8 ounces of shot. 7/8 ounces is equal to 382 grains by weight of shot.

If anyone wonders how much shot a 50 thru 120 grain powder measure contains, follow this link.
(Yes. The values it gives are approximations because different size shot will fill the measure a little more or less than other size shot but for fairly good "ballparking", it's close enough. I'm sure the birds or small game won't notice the difference. :) )
