i purchase a barrel coning tool from Joe Wood recently. I must say that this man is very easy to do bussiness with. we could use more like him.
the tool arrived in very quick fashion. it is well made and of high quality. the instructions were clear and well written and the sandpaper template was a great help.
i finished coning my 3rd barrel last night. as with all three barrels this thing worked to perfection. each barrel had a slightly different bore but the tooll worked to perfection on each.
i want to thank joe wood for producing such a fine product and being an absolute pleasure to do bussines with. you cant go wrong dealing with this man.
thanks joe

I think I may need one of those for my .50 New Englander. Looks like I can see some bad areas near the muzzle.

I bought one this year, I coned two .54s with it. One had such a tight bore that I had to buy a .526 mold just to have a ball I could get down with a patched ball down without a hammer. After coning this rifle, I can start a .530 ball easily with my thumb.

It takes several hours to cone a barrel with the tool but it is time well spent when you finish.

I have shot the first rifle I coned but not the second.

Here is the 50 yard target, I pulled the first shot then settled down for the next two. The other holes were from while I was adjusting the sights.

I coned my favorite 45 hunting rifle with Joe's tool. I should have done it years ago! It's so nice not to have to use a short starter and it's really fun to beat those folks at a shooting match who say that coning ruins the accuracy. I ordered his tool for my new 54 but haven't gotten around to using it yet. I'll do it for sure before this fall's deer season.

Guys, since I've went back to shooting patch and ball, as well as the fact that I'm much older now, I have been somewhat concerned about forgetting to seat the ball after using a short starter. Doing so would most likely result in a bulge (ring) in the barrel if it were to happen. And Just yesterday while I was doing some testing with my Crockett rifle I thought I would try to seat a patch and ball without using a short starter. For that rifle, as well as the patch/ball combo, it just happened to work out with just the ramrod even though the barrel is not coned. This eliminates one step in the process and I can see where it might very well reduce the possibility of ringing the barrel. Therefore I can easily see the advantage of coning the barrel on a front loader. I definitely need to do so on my .50's as well as my .54 GPR.

Now with that said, and I know this is getting away from the topic of coning a barrel, I did change patch material and lube. With the other patch lube and patch material I was using (same thickness) it was difficult to start a patched ball even with a short starter after a couple of shots. In short, the patch material and lube I'm now using does not foul up the barrel like the previous lube did. So I think I will get by with my Crockett Squirrel rifle as is. But the others ones need to be coned.

I shoot maxis and it's so nice to not have to fumble with them to get centered on the bore. I coned all my rifles and most took 45 min to an hour.
Indeed. I shoot Maxi's out of my .50 New Englander and I can see where, after years of doing so, there appears to be some bad places at the end of the riflings. Its to my belief coning the barrel might very well clean it up some. If nothing more it will make it much easirer to load a conical.

I've coned all 6 of mine with his .50 cal tool and couldn't be happier with the product... I like not having to carry the short starter as its always been kind of a pita...

so far the TC renegade seems to have a tighter bore and the barrel metal seems tougher....am still working on it. .hopefully tonight after work will prove completion

After reading all the reviews I decided I would order one in 45 cal.
Everything went flawlessly from ordering one from Joe to completion of the barrel.
I’ve really never seen such helpful instructions. In todays world it was refreshing to see the information Joe include.
One more 45 to do then off to the range.

I hope to be doing my .32 Crockett this week. I’m waiting for the sandpaper to get here.
Do not know what patches and ball size you are using in your Crockett, but I don't need to do a thing to mine to load. Using .015 pillow ticking patches and .310 RB. Ball starts just fine with my fingers and ramrod. I do, however, plan on getting one of those tools to do my .54 GPR IF it needs one. Haven't tried to load without a short starter yet.

I use .311 and .020 ticking. It loads fine once started and shoots really good. I did cone it this week though. It starts better but I should have gone a little more with the tool. My groups improved when I went from .018 to .020 ticking. I’m going to leave it the way it’s is now. I’m really happy with the way it’s shooting.

Well, you may very well be onto something. I have found that with .310 RB and .015 ticking mine loads very easily. So much so that no short starter is necessary. So this has left me pondering on trying some thicker ticking (.018) that I have laying around, to begin with. I do have some thicker ticking but with the small dia ramrod I am not sure if I will try it or not. Just have to see. I do know that I like the ability of not having to use a short starter with nor having to cone the muzzle.
